The Green Bay Packers have a number of decisions to make in the imminent future on a number of their starting veteran players, many of whom were once considered cornerstones of the organization.
One player who is in danger of getting cut, Pro Bowl edge rusher Rashan Gary, made a post on Instagram on Friday.
However, the post has since been deleted from Gary’s social media, and reports have surfaced confirming that he has not been traded or released by the franchise.
“Rashan Gary has not yet been traded or released, per source, as both options remain on the table.” Schneidman wrote.
Per ESPN’s Rob Demovsky’s sources, Gary’s account had been “hacked”, producing the fake graphic.
What Did Rashan Gary’s Original Message Say?
Gary originally posted an emotional graphic saying farewell to Green Bay, thanking both the team and the fans for the past few years.
“When I got the call in 2019, it was one of the greatest moments of my life, and it always will be.” Gary wrote in a statement on a graphic released on social media. “The opportunity to represent Green Bay and Packers Nation across the country and around the world is something I will never forget.”
“Like all chapters in life, this one has come to an end.” Gary continued in the message. “I want to thank everyone who supported me and my family throughout the years. The love, the energy, and the memories mean more than words can explain.”
And the former 12th overall pick finished off with, “On to my next stop — nowhere near done yet. All 6’5″, 275… can’t wait.”
What Will the Packers Wo With Gary Now?
The former Michigan man originally signed a 4 year, $96 million extension back in October 2023. If the team release Gary, the Packers will save almost $11 million in 2026 whilst incurring around a $17 million dead cap hit.
The options to either release or trade Gary are still very much “on the table” as Schneidman notes above, and it appears that the Packers were certainly leaning in that direction given Gary’s confusion as to the matter – if it turns out he was not in fact hacked.
Given the size of his deal, Green Bay could struggle to find a trade partner – which is perhaps what they are in the midst of doing. And if they cannot, they will either have to keep him around, which general manager Brian Gutekunst has previously insinuated is a distinct possibility, or cut him.
