The band formed in 1987 and still includes its core members: lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bass player and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool joining. Green Day, of course, is known for blockbuster hit songs such as “Basket Case,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and “Welcome to Paradise.”

So, is Green Day performing at the Super Bowl? Yes, they are, and here’s the scoop on when and how to watch the band.

Backstory on Green Day

As mentioned above, Green Day got together in 1987 in the East Bay area of California. The band’s breakthrough album arrived in 1994 with “Dookie,” an album that brought punk music to the masses with a bevy of radio hits and millions of copies sold worldwide, according to research from Audio Ink Radio. Since then, they’ve performed everywhere from Coachella to the Milton Keynes National Bowl in the U.K.

Green Day was to punk what Metallica was the metal: They brought their underground sound to the general public and made it more mainstream. Green Day brought melody to punk.

“When we first started playing together, there was a big trend of who can play the fastest,” Armstrong told Esquire in a 2024 interview. “And it was like, ‘Well, I don’t want to do that.’ That’s not really musical for me. It became almost a bit macho, which is something we were definitely trying to get away from.”

Armstrong added of their early days, “When we toured in the early days, we were staying on people’s couches. If you’re playing in places in Montana or Corpus Christi, you’re getting a real education. Life is just coming at you from town to town.”

What Time is the Super Bowl 2026 Halftime Show?

Green Day won’t be part of the Super Bowl halftime show. But, that event will take place after the second quarter of the game. Bad Bunny will headline the event, and he has yet to officially announce guest acts who will perform with him.
