Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may not be available for Week 1 of the 2026 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs will definitely be in the market for a capable veteran quarterback in free agency in 2026, considering Patrick Mahomes’ injury and the latest news and rumors on his potential return date, and one NFL analyst believes Russell Wilson could be the perfect fit.

Wilson is a 10-time Pro Bowler who has won one Super Bowl and come up one yard short of winning another, so he has the playoff experience and overall knowledge to be Mahomes’ backup and bridge starter. He has also accumulated over $315 million in career earnings, so most don’t expect his salary demands to be a major concern.

Wilson will be looking for his personal ideal landing spot in free agency this spring, and at age 37, that could be the Chiefs.

NFL Writer Makes Case for Chiefs to Sign Russell Wilson as Patrick Mahomes’ Bridge QB

Russell Wilson called win-win free agent fit for Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested this free agency match on January 22, and it actually does make a good deal of sense.

“After falling short of a playoff berth with the [Pittsburgh] Steelers in 2024 and falling flat with the New York Giants this past season, Russell Wilson should probably consider moving on to his post-playing career,” Knox began. Adding that “the 37-year-old had a borderline Hall of Fame career with the Seattle Seahawks but has actually hurt his case in the year since.”

Despite Knox’s opinion on that, the veteran writer also noted that Wilson has made it abundantly clear that he is playing football in 2026, and he has. “I’m not blinking,” Wilson told reporters during his exit interview with the Giants. “I know what I’m capable of.”

With that in mind, Knox explained the KC fit, which he labeled as Wilson’s “best landing spot” in NFL free agency.

“Wilson is unlikely to find a true starting opportunity this offseason, but he could make sense as a bridge option for the Kansas City Chiefs,” Knox continued. “Patrick Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL, and neither Gardner Minshew nor Chris Oladokun is under contract for 2026.”

The Bleacher Report analyst concluded that “joining Kansas City might allow Wilson to start a few more games, perhaps be part of a Chiefs resurgence, and calmly shift into the backup phase of his career.”

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Was Not Willing to Guarantee He’d Be Back for Week 1 in the Most Recent Injury Update News

Wilson’s play has certainly declined in recent years, but he did receive positive feedback as a model teammate and mentor for Giants rookie Jaxson Dart, and he still led the Steelers to the postseason in 2024.

Kansas City has also openly talked about targeting backup QBs who can test and keep up with Mahomes mentally, and we know Wilson can do that as a 14-year veteran with 130 career wins. Needless to say, he’d probably check a lot of boxes from a Chiefs perspective if he’s willing to sign for cheap, but is there a legitimate opportunity for playing time?

Wilson is unlikely to get a starting offer in 2026, so his next best opportunity would be a backup role that comes with a built-in opportunity for regular season snaps. That’s Kansas City, in a nutshell.

In Mahomes’ most recent injury update, he stated that his goal is to make it back in time for Week 1, but even the two-time NFL MVP admitted he could not guarantee his return date.

Mahomes’ expected recovery timeline puts him on track for a late August or early September return if all goes well, but late September or early October could be more realistic. If that’s the case, someone like Wilson could be guaranteed a month’s worth of starts in one of the most well-respected offenses in football.
