Travis Kelce faces one of the biggest decisions of his career as the Kansas City Chiefs head into the 2026 offseason following a difficult year.
After a season that ended with a 6-11 record and no playoff appearance, speculation has grown about whether the 36-year-old tight end will return for a 14th NFL season or step away from football. The Chiefs’ struggles were compounded by quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffering a torn ACL late in the year, marking the franchise’s first missed postseason since 2014.
While Kelce has not announced a decision, he has spoken openly about retirement in the past — and his recent comments have again put the topic front and center.
Travis Kelce Has Thought About Retirement for Years
Kelce addressed the idea of retirement in WSJ Magazine’s December/January 2023 issue, explaining that the physical toll of football has made the decision an ongoing consideration.
“I think about retiring more than anyone could ever imagine,” Kelce said at the time.
He described the cumulative impact of his career, including the surgeries and lingering pain that come with playing at a high level for more than a decade.
“That’s the only thing I’ve never really been open about … the discomfort. The pain. The lingering injuries — the 10 surgeries I’ve had,” Kelce said, adding that he still feels “every single surgery to this day.”
Chiefs tight ends coach Tom Melvin offered additional insight in the same report, explaining that Kelce has consistently played through injuries that would sideline many players.
“He has phenomenal pain tolerance,” Melvin said. “He’s played through things that other athletes I’ve coached through the years have not been able to push through. He’s mentally tough — way off the charts.”
Kelce’s longtime trainer and physical therapist, Alex Skacel, also noted that there is rarely a day during the season when Kelce is not managing bruises, scrapes, or injuries that require treatment beyond basic recovery.
How Andy Reid Plays Into The Future Hall of Famer’s Decision

Kelce has also tied his future closely to head coach Andy Reid in the past. After his widely discussed sideline altercation with Reid during Super Bowl LVIII, Kelce addressed the moment on “New Heights,” the podcast he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce.
“I’m a passionate guy,” Kelce said. “I love coach Reid. Coach Reid knows how much I love to play for him, how much I love to be a product of his coaching career.”
Kelce went on to make his stance clear.
“I’m not playing for anybody else but ‘Big Red,’” he said. “If he calls it quits, I’m out there with him, man.”
At the time, Reid’s future appeared secure. However, questions surfaced this offseason as the Chiefs reevaluated their direction following a disappointing year. Reid, who has led Kansas City to five Super Bowl appearances in six seasons, recently addressed the speculation.
“I mean, I think I’m coming back, right?” Reid told reporters. “If they’ll have me back, I’ll come back. You never know in this business. That’s a tough one. But I plan on it, yeah.”
Travis Kelce’s Eric Bieniemy Comments Spark New Speculation
Kelce’s most recent remarks have again fueled retirement talk, this time during a discussion about offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. After Matt Nagy’s contract expired following the 2025 season, Kansas City began searching for a new coordinator, with Bieniemy emerging as a familiar option.
Speaking on the January 21 episode of “New Heights,” Kelce sounded energized about the possibility of Bieniemy’s return.
“I think it’s a marriage that’s going to pick up right where it left off,” Kelce said. “You can see kind of his personality, what he brings to the table…their body of work was definitely an Eric Bieniemy style of football. I can’t wait to see him back in the building.”
That final line drew attention. Kelce spoke as if he expects to still be part of the team when Bieniemy arrives, rather than as someone preparing to watch from the outside.
