hat a start it has been to the 2025 NFL season for the Los Angeles Chargers. Entering the season as contenders after finishing 11-6 last season, the Chargers got the campaign started exactly how they needed, beating the Kansas City Chiefs in an upset in week one. Hungry to build off of their win in Brazil, the Chargers were ready to go in week two and beat the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football to start the season at 2-0.

Not only did the win put the Chargers in a good spot in their quest for a Super Bowl, but by beating the Raiders, the Chargers also made some NFL history and joined a very exclusive club that only three other teams have done in the last 45 years.

Chargers Make History

The Chargers are the third team since 1980 to win their first two games against divisional opponents away from home, and are the first franchise to achieve that feat since 1999. Despite the Chargers being the designated home team in Brazil during week one, that win still counts towards the feat because it was away from Southern California.

However, the last two franchises to have won two straight road divisional games to start a season were not able to seal the deal and win it all, making this an even bigger opportunity for the Chargers. In 1983, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Washington Commanders (then known as the Redskins) in week one before beating the St. Louis Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals and then a member of the NFC East) and despite finishing 12-4, they lost in the wild card playoffs.

Then in 1999, the Pittsburgh Steelers started that season off with back-to-back wins against the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns, but only won four more games en route to finishing 6-10 and missing the playoffs completely. The Chargers will do everything that they can to make sure that their hot start continues and does not end up in a late season collapse.

The Chargers Outlook for the Rest of 2025

This season will not be easy for the Chargers, but there is certainly an opportunity for them to win double digit games for the second straight season– and even take home an AFC West crown. Not only are the Chargers 2-0, but they are 2-0 against their division and will have the chance to sweep their first round of divisional matchups in week three when they host the Denver Broncos. Three straight divisional wins right out of the gate is crucial– already guaranteeing the Chargers at least a .500 record against AFC West teams and getting them one step closer towards snapping the Chiefs‘ nine year division title streak.

And as the Chargers return most of their defensive unit from a year ago– one that ended 2024 as one of the NFL’s top defenses– they also invested heavily in improving their offense, which should help them tremendously towards achieving their goals. Adding players such as Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton while bringing back guys like Keenan Allen, the Chargers offense has all the makings to be a top unit and be their catalyst for a Super Bowl championship.
