The Los Angeles Rams are entering a challenging stretch of the 2026 NFL season as they look to remain competitive in the NFC. Sean McVay’s team recently secured a 24-9 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, but injuries continue to create problems across the roster.
The Rams have dealt with several absences on both sides of the ball. Maintaining defensive depth has become particularly important as they prepare for the second half of the season. Their secondary has been key to the team’s defensive performance, making every injury another challenge for McVay’s coaching staff.
As the team looks to build momentum after its victory over the Chargers, the availability of key defensive players remains a major concern.
Jaylen Watson Sends Strong Message Amid Rams Injury Setback
After a season-ending shoulder injury, Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson posted a defiant Instagram message, sharing a photo with teammates and expressing confidence in his recovery.
“I’ll be back betta than Eva believe it🎢 #Godschild,” Watson wrote.
His message came after head coach Sean McVay confirmed on Wednesday, November 4, that Watson would undergo shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the 2026 season.
Watson re-aggravated his previously dislocated right shoulder in the Rams’ Week 8 game against the Chargers on Sunday.
He first dislocated the same shoulder in Week 3 against Denver, missed the next game, then returned and played through the injury.
After consulting the team’s medical staff, McVay said surgery was the best option because the shoulder was highly likely to come out again and cause further damage.
Watson wanted to continue playing, but the Rams decided against risking a more serious injury.
“Bummer for him, and he’s been such a stud for us,” McVay said. “He wanted to be able to play through it, but just kind of understanding the totality of it all, and just some of the different things recommended to be able to get that surgery, and that’ll put him on IR for the year.”
McVay praised Watson, saying the cornerback has exceeded expectations since joining the team.
Watson’s 2026 season is over, but his Instagram message shows his determination to return. He has given no recovery timeline.
Rams Face Further Injury Concerns Heading Into Week 9
Jaylen Watson’s absence creates another challenge for a Los Angeles Rams team already dealing with several injuries. The team entered Week 9 with a 4-4 record after an injury-hit opening stretch.
McVay said this season has brought more injuries than any of his 10 years as head coach, comparing it to the Rams’ injury struggles in 2022.
Unavailable players include Myles Garrett, Davante Adams, Kobie Turner, Terrance Ferguson, Poona Ford and Blake Grupe. Matthew Stafford has had arm soreness but continues to practice and play.
Watson’s absence puts more responsibility on cornerbacks Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Josh Wallace, who are expected to take on bigger defensive roles.
Both players have earned opportunities this season, and McVay trusts them with more responsibility.
“They both have played a bunch of meaningful snaps, and they’ve earned the confidence of their teammates, their coaches, and I’m excited for them,” McVay said.
The Rams’ defense got good news Wednesday, as Garrett’s 21-day practice window opened while he recovers from a knee injury.
Tight end Terrance Ferguson also had his practice window open after dealing with an ankle injury.
Both players were expected to participate in limited roles, with Garrett set to take about half the practice reps as coaches assessed his progress.
With Watson out for the season, the Rams need their remaining defensive backs to step up.
McVay’s team will look to manage its injury situation while trying to improve its record during the second half of the campaign.
