After the Miami Dolphins released All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill and traded Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos, they created a glaring need at the position.
With the Dolphins facing an apparent rebuild, a lack of wide receivers should probably not be a major problem. However, the team did invest $45 million guaranteed in quarterback Malik Willis, and the lack of talented playmakers around him may make that investment backfire.
As Willis’ former head coach, Matt LaFleur, told reporters, “But I think, too many times, you get into situations where it can’t be all on the quarterback. You got to surround these guys with pieces. Nobody can do it by themselves.”
Despite the Dolphins seemingly ignoring LaFleur’s advice as they failed to add proven wide receivers to their roster, a new report states that the team showed interest in adding a four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver.
Miami Dolphins Showed Interest in Stefon Diggs
Underdog NFL posted on X: “(Adam) Schefter: Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders reached out to Stefon Diggs.”
The report comes after Diggs signed a 1-year deal with the Washington Commanders that is worth up to $12 million. While the Dolphins lacked cap space in free agency, they received some flexibility after June 20 and currently have over $16 million in cap space, meaning Miami could have signed the former Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots receiver.
Miami’s interest in Diggs is somewhat surprising as the team had prioritized a youth movement this offseason. Diggs, who will turn 33 years old during the 2026 season, would have been the oldest player on the Dolphins roster.
Despite his age, Diggs has remained a productive wide receiver. He is coming off a season in which he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards with the New England Patriots and helped them reach the Super Bowl. Diggs’ season is even more impressive considering he suffered an ACL tear in the middle of the 2024 season.
The four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in seven of his last eight seasons.
Potential Dolphins Interest in a Veteran Wide Receiver
Prior to the news that Miami showed interest in Diggs, Dolphins on SI’s Alain Poupart seemed to believe the Dolphins would have no interest in the Pro Bowl receiver, as he wrote: “I don’t think a player like that makes sense because it would be a one-year move for a team that likely won’t contend. I’d rather the Dolphins find out what they have with Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman Jr.”
Even though the Dolphins did not end up signing Diggs, this news reveals that Miami did show interest in upgrading at the position. While Diggs may have been the best available free agent wide receiver, there are still some available veterans that could provide leadership and experience to the position.
Among those players are Tyreek Hill, Curtis Samuel, Keenan Allen and DeAndre Hopkins.
Hill faces obvious question marks regarding his health and availability for the upcoming season, while the other three names appear to be winding down in their NFL careers. Perhaps as Poupart stated, Miami opts to find out what they have with Diggs no longer being an option.
