The Minnesota Vikings are now seeing another former employee hop on a squad for the 2025-2026 NFL Playoff run.

This time, its WR and special teams ace Trent Sherfield Jr. The receiver has agreed to terms with the New England Patriots, joining their practice squad.

Sherfield Jr. joins former Vikings Garrett Bradbury, Stefon Diggs, Vederian Lowe, and many others in the Northeast. This is the receiver’s 8th different NFL employer. His career journey has taken him to each of the following:

The Vanderbilt product has seen plenty of travel in his career, serving most teams for only one season. Sherfield Jr. went undrafted out of Vandy, being picked up by the Cardinals after the 2018 NFL Draft. This was the same draft that Arizona drafted UCLA QB Josh Rosen in the first round.

Most recently, Trent Sherfield Jr. rejoined the Cardinals on their practice squad in 2025. This was after he was waived by Denver in November after the team signed Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

Dustin Baker of Vikings Territory had more on the signing:

The New England Patriots signed Sherfield on Tuesday for roster depth, a practice squad addition that could net dividends if New England activates him to the gameday roster this weekend and beyond. Sherfield went from unemployment to Round 2 of the playoffs with the stroke of a pen.

Pretty sweet gig for the 29-year-old. Not too many players go from not having a deal to being in an immediate spot to compete for the Lombardi Trophy.

Baker continued:

“Sherfield’s 2024 stat line with Minnesota — eight catches, 83 yards, one touchdown — barely scratched the surface to define his real role. His value lived elsewhere.

Much like his role in Denver this season before a midseason roster cut, Sherfield became a special teams pillar for Kevin O’Connell, logging 221 snaps and handling dirty work that rarely shows up in box scores. Offensively, he functioned as a WR5. Operationally, he stabilized kick and punt units that needed some oomph.

Sean Payton noticed. Denver moved quickly in 2025 free agency, pulling Sherfield back into a role it already knew how to maximize, at least to start the 2025 campaign.”
It’s not likely that Trent Sherfield Jr. will see too much work on the offense as a receiver, though he does provide some insurance for the room.
The majority of his work, if he is activated whatsoever from the practice squad, will come on special teams. This is a role in which he thrives.
