Folks around the NFL are wondering why the Vikings won't just promote Rob Brzezinski to general manager

The 2026 NFL Draft may be over, but the Minnesota Vikings aren’t done making moves just yet. From a roster-building perspective, the team is still looking to bring new players to town, as they recently hosted wide receiver Jauan Jennings on a free agent visit. The guy who typically makes decisions on the team’s roster construction is the general manager, but right now, the Vikings don’t have a true leader in their front office.

After surprisingly firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah earlier this offseason, Rob Brzezinski was made the team’s interim general manager, with the plan being for the team to conduct a formal search for Adofo-Mensah’s replacement after the draft. That search began earlier this week, but according to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, folks across the league are wondering why Minnesota isn’t just making Brzezinski its full-time general manager.

Vikings’ GM Search Leaves Folks Scratching Their Heads

While Adofo-Mensah didn’t exactly have a perfect track record during his time with the Vikings, it was surprising to see him get canned since he signed a contract extension with the team just last offseason. With that in mind, it seemed like Minnesota was going to have a plan in place if it was deciding to abruptly move on from Adofo-Mensah.

Instead, the team simply made Brzezinski the interim general manager and said it would begin a search for Adofo-Mensah’s true replacement after the draft. Many folks figured Brzezinski would simply become the full-time general manager (why else would he be leading the team’s draft room), but the team has followed through with its claim to conduct a thorough GM search.

The reasoning for this is unknown, especially since Brzezinski has been leading the way for a couple of months now and has made it known he wants to have the interim tag removed from his name. Brzezinski could still end up getting promoted when all is said and done, but folks across the league are still confused as to why the Vikings are conducting such a thorough search in the first place.

“Why wouldn’t they just promote Rob?” an anonymous general manager told La Canfora. “He understands the job and he’s respected there. He has a working relationship with (head coach Kevin) O’Connell. He has relationships with the agents. Make some hires to build up the personnel department under him, but don’t overthink it.”

Minnesota’s handling of this whole situation has been odd, dating back to its decision to abruptly fire Adofo-Mensah. It would be even more strange if, after putting Brzezinski in charge of the front office for free agency and the draft, he didn’t end up getting this job. If the team hires someone else, why would they not have just done that immediately after firing Adofo-Mensah?

That is the primary reason why folks can’t seem to make sense of what the Vikings are doing. Regardless, the team is committed to finding a proper replacement for Adofo-Mensah, whether it be Brzezinski or another external candidate, which will make this search worth keeping tabs on during one of the quieter periods of the offseason.
