Minnesota Vikings defensive back Jamal Adams was wearing No. 32 at practice and was getting reps with the first team as a safety. This was reported by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert on Friday afternoon.
Adams was brought to the Vikings at the end of July. He was thought to be a versatile addition to a Brian Flores-led, blitz-heavy defense. Now, it appears that he is at least being looked at as a player who could contribute to the starting defense early on.
Of course, this certainly begs the question of where this leaves Harrison Smith? As it stands right now, the Vikings are practicing like Adams is the top option at safety.
Smith’s Status Still Up In Air For Vikings
It was reported last week that Smith still had not made up his mind regarding his availability for 2026. The veteran is 37 years old. However, he showed last year that he could still be one of the best defensive backs in the NFL. He recorded 54 combined tackles, 10 passes defended, two interceptions, a sack, and a forced fumble in 15 games.
Along with a stellar 2025 season, Smith also has a reputation of being one of the best defenders in Vikings history. He ranks fourth all-time in Vikings history with 39 interceptions. He ranks first all-time with four interception return touchdowns.
Smith also has been able to show his durability, ranking third all-time in games played for defensive backs with 191. The defensive back rankings continue to be a strong point for him, as he has 21.5 sacks by a defensive back. This is second all-time, as he trails only Joey Browner, who has 37.
In addition to where he ranks statistically, he also stands by himself in some categories. For example, he is the only player in Vikings history to record at least 35 interceptions and 20 sacks in a career. Smith also has six Pro Bowl selections, which ties him with Paul Krause in that category.
New Vikings Addition Also Coming Off Strong Season
Adams is coming off a 2025 season that proved to be successful for him. He played in 17 games and recorded 45 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. He transitioned from safety to linebacker in the process of doing so. A transition like this could sometimes thwart a player’s productivity. However, in the case of Adams, he was able to still produce at a high level.
Now, it appears that the Vikings want to try Adams at a position he is familiar with. He has been a prolific safety throughout his entire career, making the Pro Bowl in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2019 with the New York Jets, and he made the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2017. Adams knows a thing or two about playing at a high level at the position.
This will certainly be a development worth watching. Smith still has a decision to make. In the meantime, Adams is ready to go. It’s a good problem to have for the Vikings, as they have a solid veteran safety in each instance. However, clearing up Smith’s status for the 2026 season could provide a bit of relief to the defense.
