Brian Flores has spent the early portion of the 2026 season watching his Minnesota Vikings defense dictate games, and he points to a familiar voice on the sideline as one reason the group keeps arriving ready. Defensive assistant Charlie Frye, hired in March 2025, has become a quiet but consistent contributor to how the unit prepares, especially when the conversation turns to the quarterback on the other side of the ball.

Charlie Frye’s Background

Frye spent six seasons as an NFL quarterback from 2005 to 2010, appearing in 26 games with 23 starts for the Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks, and Oakland Raiders. He later coached quarterbacks and served as an offensive coordinator at Central Michigan and Florida Atlantic. He worked as the Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach in 2021 under Flores, then Miami’s head coach. Frye was the QB coach for Tua Tagovailoa. That shared history, Flores said, made the reunion straightforward. “Charlie already understood how we talk about the game,” Flores explained. “He didn’t need a long introduction to the standard.”

Frye Brings Insight To Vikings D

The practical value shows up in the meeting room and on the practice field. Because Frye has both called plays and taught passers how to diagnose pressure, he helps the defensive staff anticipate the checks and progressions an opposing quarterback is likely to use. During install periods, he walks through the pictures a quarterback is taught to see, then the group builds its disguise and rush packages against those habits. “He translates the offensive side without turning it into a debate,” Flores said. “We get a cleaner look at what the quarterback is coached to do when the picture changes, and that shows up in how we practice the looks.”

Vikings Defense Yields Results

Through four games, the results have been difficult to ignore. The Vikings, 4-0 and alone atop the NFC North, rank first in the NFL in points allowed at 12.8 per game and first in sacks with 16. They sit seventh in both passing yards allowed (194.8 per game) and rushing yards allowed (94.5 per game), and sixth in takeaways with seven. The unit has also been among the league’s most active in quarterback hits, reflecting the volume and variety of pressure Flores has called. Opposing passers have completed just over half their attempts against Minnesota while absorbing steady contact.
Flores credits the preparation cycle for keeping those numbers steady even as the defensive roster has grown younger. Practice periods devoted to quarterback recognition now include Frye’s notes on footwork, eye discipline, and hot-route timing. Defenders rehearse the same landmarks an offensive coordinator would emphasize, then adjust their rush lanes and coverage drops accordingly. “It is not about copying an offense,” Flores said. “It is about knowing the language the quarterback is speaking so our players can answer it faster on Sunday.”

Charlie Frye Gives Edge To Brian Flores

Frye’s earlier work at Florida Atlantic, where the Owls improved their completion percentage dramatically in 2023 despite an early injury to the starter, reinforced the same attention to detail. On the Vikings staff, that background simply moves to the other side of the ball. Flores described the arrangement as complementary rather than flashy. “Charlie gives us an edge in the details,” he said. “When the quarterback is forced to think a half-second longer, the rest of the defense usually finishes the play.” As Minnesota continues its undefeated start, that extra half-second has become one of the quieter reasons the defense keeps controlling the scoreboard, and the reason some have the Vikings highly ranked.
Charlie Frye just may be the secret that gives Brian Flores the intel needed to create and disguise the defensive schemes we have seen continue to frustrate and terrorize opponents.
