The Patriots may not be able to agree to a contract extension with Christian Gonzalez before the 2026 campaign

The New England Patriots have had a lot of excitement brewing from their work on the field early on in training camp, but there’s a notable storyline taking place off the field. That involves the team’s ongoing contract extension negotiations with superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez, with the two sides reportedly hoping to get something done before the 2026 campaign gets underway.

Rather than reporting to training camp and not practicing, Gonzalez has continued to suit up for the Pats as these negotiations unfold. While all signs point to the team being willing to give Gonzalez what he wants, a new report indicates that he could actually wait until next offseason to sign his big-money deal with the team.

Christian Gonzalez’s Contract Extension Talks Take Unexpected Turn

The No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzalez has quickly turned himself into one of the true lockdown corners in the league. He earned an All-Pro Second Team selection in 2024, and he picked up his first Pro Bowl honor in 2025, even though he missed three games at the beginning of the season due to injury.

Gonzalez’s contract negotiations have been made uniquely challenging, though, by the fact that his agent also represents Seattle Seahawks star cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who is looking for a new deal himself this offseason. Neither one of these guys wants to put pen to paper on a deal first, as they both want to be the highest-paid cornerback in the league.

New England’s owner, Robert Kraft, publicly came out and said the team is willing to make Gonzalez the highest-paid player at his position, but he doesn’t seem too inclined to sign any deal right now. According to insider Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, despite the team’s best efforts, there hasn’t been much progress towards a new deal over the past few weeks, which could lead to this saga carrying over into next offseason.

“Gonzalez’s (contract talks) don’t seem to me like they have advanced that far,” Rapoport admitted on “Inside Training Camp.” “The hope is at some point to get a new deal, but as of right now, it’s unclear whether or not that will actually happen. Wouldn’t be surprised, for instance, if he ended up waiting till next year. Either way, when he gets paid, he’s going to be very, very rich. It’s just a matter of when it actually happens.”

Gonzalez appears to be taking a bit of a riskier approach to his contract talks. He could sign a deal that would make him the highest-paid corner right now, but that could be broken by Witherspoon in a matter of minutes. Even if Witherspoon signs before him, though, it would only be a matter of time until it gets broken next offseason.

The fact that he is practicing during training camp indicates that Gonzalez is the one holding off on finalizing a deal. He still is under contract for at least two more years, so Gonzalez could look to increase his value even more by waiting until next year to sign a big-money deal. Of course, he could get hurt or struggle in 2026, but it suddenly wouldn’t be a surprise if Gonzalez bets on himself and pushes these contract talks down the line in an attempt to earn an even bigger deal.
