You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would have picked a New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl back in August. Both teams had astronomical odds to to make it to the big dance: according to Bet MGM, New England entered the season with 80-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, while Seattle was at 60-1.
So, combining those picks makes for very, very long odds, odds that would have been unwise to bet on in any scenario.
But, as has been reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter and ESPN’s Mike Reiss, someone did pick this matchup preseason; and her ties with the teams run deep.
Jack Westover’s Sister Makes $18,000 Off of Preseason Bet
Patriots’ fullback and special teams contributor Jack Westover was doing a radio interview with 93.3 KJR, a Washington based radio station, when he claimed that his sister placed a $5 bet on this exact matchup ahead of the 2025 season.
According to Westover, the bet has paid her out $18,000.
“She’s got her second baby on the way, so she’s well happy about that,” Westover said.
Many have speculated whether this is a true story or not, and while there isn’t much we can do to verify it, it makes for a great story nonetheless.
As to why his sister may have placed this bet, I would venture to guess it was a combination of her hometown team (Westover hails from Washington state) and her brother’s team.
Seattle and New England’s Wacky Paths to Super Bowl LX
There are plenty of reasons that neither of these teams were highly touted heading into the 2025 season. For New England, it had been two horrible seasons in 2023 and 2024, where it went a combined 8-26 in those two campaigns.
But, those two bad seasons played a huge part in this year’s success.
The 4-13 finish in 2023 gave the Patriots the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 Draft, when they selected Drake Maye, who fell behind Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels. Maye is on track to win or be the runner-up for the MVP this season, so I’d say that season of suck was well worth it.
Then, in 2024, New England was bad again, though there were flashes of strong play from guys like Maye, Christian Gonzalez, Kayshon Boutte and more.
The 2025 Draft and New England’s signing spree completely revitalized this team. Will Campbell, Jared Wilson, TreVeyon Henderson, Craig Woodson, and Kyle Williams have all been impact players this season, alongside marquee signees like Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, Milton Williams, and Robert Spillane.
Seattle on the other hand, had more to go off of from their 10-7 season in 2024, but with a turnover at quarterback, plenty of questions arose. That new QB was Sam Darnold, who proved that had more left in the tank after a number of mediocre seasons with multiple teams.
The Seahawks have also benefitted from the play of the odds-on favorite to win Offensive Player of the Year in Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
