The New England Patriots rallied late to pick up a 24-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in their second preseason contest on Saturday night, pushing their record to 1-0-1 after they tied with the Indianapolis Colts last week. After resting their starters again, Mike Vrabel and the rest of the coaching staff got a closer look at the depth at his disposal.

Vrabel certainly had a hectic offseason both on and off the field, but in a unique turn of events, he wasn’t the coach in the spotlight for much of this game. That would have been former Arizona Cardinals coach Jennifer Welter, who was interviewed on the field during the game, with the clip quickly going viral on social media.

Jennifer Welton Interview During Patriots-Eagles Game Goes Viral

A former professional women’s football player, Welter is known for becoming the first female coach in the history of the NFL. In 2015, Welter spent time with the Cardinals as an assistant coaching intern, and while she only stuck around with the team through the preseason, she is widely credited with being one of the trailblazers for women’s coaches in the world of men’s professional sports.

Welter worked as a defensive specialist for the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football back in 2019, but since then, she has been out of the world of coaching. Instead, Welter has been working on promoting women’s flag football, which has quickly become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

That is why Welter was in attendance for this game, as she does not have any affiliation with either the Patriots or Eagles. On the Pats broadcast for this contest, Welter was interviewed during the game to help promote women’s flag football, but as it unfolded, fans quickly began to deduce that she may have had a bit too much to drink while watching the action.

Welter’s interview may have stolen the show, but it shouldn’t take away from the work the Patriots did on the field during the game. Both Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton has success moving the ball on offense, and while the defense didn’t have its best night, it still did enough to slow down the Eagles and come away with a victory in this game.

New England has one more preseason contest against the Cleveland Browns coming up on Thursday, and after resting its starters in each of its first two games, the expectation is that they will get some run in this contest. How long Vrabel will play his top guys is unknown, but the Pats’ preseason finale should provide fans with their first look at what this team is really going to look like on both sides of the ball in the upcoming 2026 campaign.
