The New England Patriots got one of their most important defenders in Christian Gonzalez back on the field today.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that Gonzalez returned to practice Aug. 24 and “looked to be moving well” while “participating extensively.”

It marked his first practice since Aug. 10, when he went down during a one-on-one rep.

Pats Pulpit reported that Gonzalez had missed seven practices and both preseason games during the absence.

The development was welcomed inside the locker room.

Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones said, via Boston Herald reporter Doug Kyed, that Gonzalez’s health was the priority.

“The most important thing is health and everything,” Jones said. “So happy that he’s feeling better and everything. And happy to have him back too.”

The return also came only hours after head coach Mike Vrabel said before practice the Patriots were “hopeful” Gonzalez could do some work today.

Gonzalez’s return comes when New England has more than two weeks before its Sept. 9 regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Patriots close the preseason Thursday at Cleveland, and Vrabel said Monday he had yet to decide whether the starters would play. That makes Gonzalez’s ability to stack practice days more important than whether he receives snaps in the finale.

There’s also recent history behind the cautious approach.

Gonzalez suffered an injury during training camp last year and missed the first three games of the 2025 season. Once he returned, he started all 14 games he played and finished with 69 tackles and 10 passes defensed. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection after the season.

For a player New England regularly asks to handle the toughest coverage assignments, conditioning and timing are significant. Gonzalez had missed roughly two weeks of work, including the Patriots’ two joint practices against the Eagles, before returning Monday.

Vrabel was unwilling to project Gonzalez’s availability for Week 1 earlier in the day, saying he was focused on getting through the current stage of the process.

The progression from pregame conditioning work Saturday to extensive practice participation Monday is still the clearest positive step of his recovery.

Patriots Secondary Looks Different With Gonzalez Back

Getting Gonzalez back also allows the Patriots to restore the structure they envisioned at cornerback.

Gonzalez, Carlton Davis and Jones give New England an established top three, with Gonzalez capable of matching up outside against an opponent’s top receiver and Jones handling extensive work in the slot.

ESPN’s Mike Clay gave the Patriots’ cornerback room a grade of 9 in his 2026 unit rankings, putting the group among the league’s strongest on paper.

Gonzalez’s absence forced New England to distribute more work to its depth options during a stretch that included three joint-practice sessions and two preseason games. Those reps could prove useful later in the season, but the defense is a different beast when Gonzalez is available.

His return also dampens the conversation about pass defense uncertainty that followed him being out.

Regardless, the elephant in the room is Gonzalez’s contract extension, which created speculation about whether the missed time was connected to business. Vrabel repeatedly said the issue was physical, including when Gonzalez remained sidelined earlier in August.

Currently, the Patriots have something more tangible to evaluate, as Gonzalez is back on the field, moving well and taking on a workload with the season opener approaching.

After last summer’s injury lingered into September, Monday’s progress gives New England a better chance to have its top cornerback ready from the start this time.
