Pats Named Potential Suitor For 21 Sack EDGE Rusher In Trade

The New England Patriots addressed their defensive line after recording a league low of 28 sacks last season. The Patriots used free agency to help bolster the D-line and see more production from the front 4 in the 2025-26 season.

New England signed EDGE Harold Landry to a three-year deal and defensive tackle Milton Williams to a four-year contract to help get to opposing quarterbacks.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes the Patriots could add one more D-lineman to the team. Knox names New York Giants’ EDGE rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux as a player who can be traded to New England sometime during the season.

“A pass-rushing trio of Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and rookie Abdul Carter could help put a few much-needed wins on the board. Financially, though, keeping all three players for the long term will be difficult,” Knox wrote. “Thibodeaux is slated to be a free agent in 2027, one year before Carter becomes extension-eligible. If the rookie is as advertised, New York will have to strongly consider moving on from either Burns or Thibodeaux.”

“Thibodeaux should command a strong offer, but he’d provide much more value than Neal. He hasn’t quite been the game-wrecker New York thought it was getting at fifth overall in 2022. However, he’s still a 24-year-old edge-rusher who has averaged seven sacks per season and is under contract for two more years…. Thibodeaux won’t net the Giants anything close to what Dallas got for Parsons, but a high Day-2 selection is a reasonable expectation.

Knox believes that if teams were to trade for Thibs, they would need to give up a 2026 2nd-round pick.

As mentioned earlier, the Patriots only had 28 sacks last season. The top two sack leaders for New England tied for 5 apiece. If Kayvon Thibodeaux were to land in Foxborough, he could provide immediate sacks for the team.

Thibs numbers were down last season, partially due to an injury forcing him out of 5 games. In 12 games played for the Giants last season, Thibodeaux recorded 5.5 sacks, more than any Patriot did last season.

The former Oregon Duck has demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level, as evidenced by his performance in the 2023-24 season, during which he registered 11.5 sacks.

Harold Landry, who has been voted as a captain for the Patriots, can Thibodeaux develop in the league. Landry is entering his 7th season in the league, with four of those seasons having logged 9 sacks or more.

Thibodeaux Up For Contract Extension

Kayvon Thibodeaux is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract and is set to have a base salary of $1.1 million, according to Over The Cap. With the fifth-year option, the EDGE rusher will have a cap number of $14.76 million.

The New England Patriots currently have $47 million in cap space available. If the Pats were to make a trade for the defender, the chances of him remaining with the organization seem plausible.

Thibodeaux could receive a contract extension and the Patriots can help set up the defensive line for the future.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said earlier in the offseason that the team would be looking around for players who could help the team.
