The New Orleans Saints added wide receiver Trey Palmer from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former Denver Broncos offensive lineman Xavier Truss from waivers on Wednesday. With the ninth spot in waiver priority, the Saints were able to add two young players with high potential.

New Orleans just got down to its 53-man roster on Tuesday, but is in the process of filling out the practice squad. The Saints currently have six wide receivers and nine offensive linemen on the regular-season roster.

Along with the two additions, New Orleans lost two of its own players to other teams through waivers. Cornerback Rico Payton was claimed by the New York Giants, and linebacker D’Marco Jackson got scooped up by the Chicago Bears.

The WR Room Got an Exciting New Piece

Palmer was a name that many teams likely looked into during the waiver process after showing a lot of promise for Tampa Bay. The 24-year-old is a former sixth-round pick who caught 39 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season back in 2023.

Last season, Palmer saw a decrease in usage in one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the NFL, appearing in 15 games. He tallied 12 receptions for 172 yards and one touchdown, averaging 14.3 yards per reception.

The Saints could use Palmer’s speed and athleticism, with the former Nebraska Cornhusker boasting 4.33 speed. He spent the 2024 season returning punts for the Buccaneers, finishing with 136 yards.

Palmer couldn’t find a role in Tampa Bay’s deep wide receiver room in 2025, and will now have an opportunity in New Orleans. The Saints kept six wideouts on their initial 53-man roster, and will have to see how Palmer fits in.

In college, Palmer proved he can handle a large workload. His senior season featured 71 catches for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns. He added 75 rushing yards on five attempts, showcasing his versatility and skills as a ballcarrier.

A hamstring injury kept Palmer out of the first two preseason games in 2025, but has since healed. In the lone preseason action he saw, the 24-year-old caught one pass for 13 yards in 17 snaps played.

Truss Is a Wildcard Addition to the O-Line

Xavier Truss

As an undrafted rookie, the odds were stacked against Truss to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster. The 24-year-old caught the attention of the Saints, who will now have him competing for a spot on the offensive line.

During the preseason, Truss appeared in three games, playing 65 total snaps. He allowed two hurries and two pressures in 30 pass-blocking opportunities.

The former Georgia Bulldog has great size at 6-foot-7, 320 pounds, and showed solid athleticism at the combine. He finished with a 6.99 Relative Athletic Score out of 10.

At Georgia, Truss was a mainstay on the offensive line from 2022 to 2024. He started 41 games across the final three years of his collegiate career, mostly at left guard. He showed versatility as well, appearing at tackle on occasion.

Truss has been around a winning program, playing a part in two national championships in college. Although he didn’t make the cut in Denver, the Saints see something promising in the young lineman.
