The New York Giants are expected to be busy over the next few days as free agency officially gets rolling. After hiring John Harbaugh as their new head coach, the front office will be hard at work revamping his roster so he has a real shot at getting his new team back on track.

While the Giants are going to bring some external players to town, they also have their own crop of free agents that they will be looking to keep around for the next few years. One guy who is a part of that group is veteran tight end Chris Manhertz, but it sounds like he has gotten a big update on his future ahead of the start of free agency.

Giants Re-Sign Chris Manhertz to One-Year Contract

Manhertz entered the NFL in 2015 as an undrafted free agent, initially signing with the Buffalo Bills. While he didn’t make the team’s final roster, he was scooped up by the New Orleans Saints, and after spending his first year in the pros on their practice squad, he would eventually make his NFL debut in 2016.

After just three games with New Orleans, Manhertz was released, but he got claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers. This would be his home until 2020, as he would eventually depart in free agency. Since then, Manhertz has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos, before landing with the Giants in 2024.

Primarily used as a blocking tight end, Manhertz has just four catches for 37 yards during his two seasons with New York. However, he fills his role with the team well, as he also serves as a key piece of their special teams units. With free agency looming, Manhertz’s future was up in the air, but he ended up re-signing with the Giants on a one-year contract, meaning he will return for his 12th season in the NFL.

“Giants are bringing back TE Chris Manhertz on a one-year deal for his 12th NFL season, per his agent Sean Stellato,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in a post on X.

Nobody is going to argue that Manhertz is the flashiest player on the Giants roster, but these are the sorts of under-the-radar moves that often win teams games once the season starts up. Manhertz is a veteran who knows what is expected of him, and even with a new regime taking over, his standing with New York clearly has helped him earn a new deal with the team.

Taking care of this piece of business ahead of free agency is important, as it’s one less thing general manager Joe Schoen and the rest of the front office will have to worry about over the next few days. The re-signing of Manhertz only feels like the tip of the iceberg, though, as the Giants will likely be making a slew of moves over the next 24 to 48 hours.
