Darren Mougey made one thing abundantly clear: New York Jets running back Breece Hall isn’t going anywhere.
Mougey spoke with the media at the 2026 NFL combine for just under nine minutes. During that press conference, Mougey was asked about Hall’s future with the team.
“Yeah, the tags are an option. Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done to keep Breece around. I think I have said that for the last year since I’ve gotten here. Breece is a good player. We want to find a way to keep him around. We have been going through that process and are still doing so. We have a week to find out, you know, if we can’t get to an agreement, which way we will go with that tag,” Mougey explained.
The franchise tag window opened on Tuesday, February 17, and it closes on Tuesday, March 3.
“Yeah, we will find a way to keep Breece here if we can’t get a deal done,” Mougey reiterated.
Mougey Shares Information From Conversations With Hall
One way or another, the Jets will be holding onto Hall in 2026, but does he want to be here long term?
“I do. I do get the sense that Breece wants to be here. We have had good conversations throughout the season and after the season. So we are just finding a way to do that,” Mougey said.
It has been unclear how much Hall wants to be a Jet based on his social media activity. Over the weekend, he spoke at a Long Island event and was asked if he wants to stay with the Jets for the foreseeable future.
“You know, I don’t know. I’ve addressed this for like, you know, the last six or seven months now, so now I’m just kind of like whatever happens, happens,” Hall told the New York Post.

“Breece Hall will be on the roster one way or another,” beat reporter Nick Faria posted.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini said, “Breece Hall isn’t going anywhere. Whether it’s a tag or a new contract, the plan is to keep him.”
“Darren Mougey says that Breece Hall will be with the Jets next season. If they can’t sign him, then they will tag him. Hall going nowhere,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY said.
NFL Insider Ari Meirov wrote, “The Jets will use the franchise or transition tag on RB Breece Hall if they can’t get a contract done before the March 3 deadline, per GM Darren Mougey. Franchise tag takes Hall off the market. Transition tag will allow Hall to get offers from other teams, but the Jets would have the right to match.”
If the Jets can’t work out a long-term deal, then the decision for the Jets is which franchise tag to utilize.
They have three options at their disposal: non-exclusive, exclusive, or the transition tag.
Exclusive is the only one of the three that wouldn’t allow Hall to seek out other offers on the open market. The other two tags would allow Hall to gauge the market, but the Jets would have the right of first refusal.
