The 2025 season didn’t go according to plan for New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

Head coach Aaron Glenn announced on Friday, December 19, that Wilson won’t be coming off injured reserve. Instead, he will get ready for the offseason programs in 2026.

Shortly after that announcement, Wilson took to Instagram to fire off a message.

“Next season best season – watch this 👌,” Wilson posted on his Instagram story.

Wilson Was on Pace for the Best Season of His Career

Things might not have been working for the Jets in terms of wins and losses, but Wilson was getting his work in.

The former Ohio State product will finish this season with 36 receptions on 59 targets for 395 receiving yards and four touchdowns in seven games. Before the injury issues, Wilson was on pace to record 102 catches for 1,119 receiving yards and score 11 touchdowns.

Instead of having the best year of his career, Wilson finishes with the worst statistical season of his career.

The Jets Made the Right Decision on Wilson’s Present and Future

Wilson signed a four-year $130 million contract extension that included $90 million in total guarantees. The team didn’t sign him to a one-year deal.

The point I’m making is the Jets have to balance the present with the future. You have to weigh the pros and cons of every decision. The Jets have three games remaining in the 2025 regular season. This team is 3-11 and has already been eliminated from the playoffs.

What would be the point of throwing Wilson out there? The risks far outweigh the potential rewards.

Shut him down and get him ready for 2026. Wilson is a long-term foundational pillar for this offense and organization.

With Wilson out of the picture for the rest of the season, the Jets can spread those targets to the other young pass catchers on the roster. The Jets should use the remainder of the season as an opportunity to evaluate their players.

Bluntly, the team needs to find out who is worth keeping around and who isn’t. Then in the offseason, find their next QB1 to throw Wilson the ball.

Top Social Media Reactions to Wilson Jets Update

“Protect Garrett Wilson at all costs. See you next year king,” NYJ Matt posted.

“This is the right move long term. Garrett Wilson is the type of person & player who would go out there with 1 leg to help team, but with just a few games left, let him get 100% for next season,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY responded.

“Garrett Wilson’s season is over. His final stats: 36 catches, 395 yards, 4 TDs. Before he got hurt Wilson was on pace for a great season (382 yards and 4 TD came in the first five games, he was banged up in the other two). Now he’ll have time to heal up for 2026 — with another new QB on the way,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic posted.

“The Jets are shutting down Garrett Wilson, per Glenn. Wilson has missed the last five games with a knee sprain. No surprise whatsoever,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said.
