The Philadelphia Eagles were unable to successfully defend their Super Bowl championship, as they labored through another season full of tension and expectations that weren’t met. As a result, this figures to be a very important offseason, and once head coach Nick Sirianni finalizes his coaching staff, the team will have to take a close look at its roster.
One player whose future with the team is very much up in the air is star wide receiver A.J. Brown. Throughout the year, Brown was not shy in voicing his displeasure with his lack of involvement in the passing game, and it has once again led to trade rumors swirling around him. The next few months will determine what the future holds for Brown, and it sounds like there’s a decent chance he will be on the move this offseason.
A.J. Brown’s Relationship with Eagles Remains ‘Tenuous’
On the surface, Brown put together another strong season with the Eagles, as he caught 78 passes for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. When you watched him play, though, it was clear that he was frustrated with the state of the offense. As one of the top wide receivers in the league, Brown wants the ball as much as possible, but Philly’s inconsistent passing attack led to him getting cast aside on several occasions throughout the year.
As the year went on, Brown became more and more vocal about Philadelphia’s offensive woes. There’s no doubt that it had an impact on the locker room, and while the Eagles still found their way to the postseason, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see them get bounced in the wild-card round by the San Francisco 49ers.
That has set the stage for a wildly important offseason when it comes to Brown’s future with the Eagles. Tensions are at an all-time high, and if Philly is going to trade him, it feels like now is the time to do so. According to NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Brown’s relationship with the team is still “tenuous,” and while the two sides haven’t discussed his future yet, that is likely going to happen over the coming weeks.
“A.J. Brown’s situation with the Eagles is still unresolved, but his relationship with the team remains somewhat tenuous,” Russini wrote. “From what I’m hearing, substantial conversations about his future have not yet taken place, but expect talks to ramp up around the NFL combine in two weeks.”
Should the Eagles Trade A.J. Brown?

The Eagles are certainly in a tough spot with Brown. On one hand, he’s one of the most consistent wide receivers in the league, and when he’s involved on offense, good things happen. At some point, though, the drama and the damage he’s causing within Philadelphia’s building will outweigh his production on the field.
Philly’s front office has to determine where that tipping point is. There’s a very good chance that tipping point has already been reached, which could lead to Brown landing with a new team this offseason. You can’t give away top pass catchers in the NFL lightly, though, which is why these upcoming discussions between Brown and the Eagles figure to be so important.
