The Philadelphia Eagles played a role in the coaching staff change the New York Giants are undergoing this offseason. The Giants fired former head coach Brian Daboll in the middle of the season and parted ways with ex-offensive coordinator Mike Kafka at the conclusion of the campaign.
In an ironic twist of fate, either of the two former Giants coaches could now play a role in getting the Eagles offense back on track.
SNY’s Connor Hughes reported this weekend the Eagles are considering Daboll and Kafka as candidates for their offensive coordinator opening.
“Along with Mike Kafka, ex-Giants coach Brian Daboll is expected to get an extended lookout the Eagles OC job, per sources,” wrote Hughes on X.
“Daboll & Jalen Hurts were together at Alabama.”
Daboll worked one year at Alabama as the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban in 2017. Although Tua Tagovailoa replaced him midway through the championship game, Jalen Hurts started for the Crimson Tide that season, which ended with a national championship.
Daboll spent roughly three and a half seasons as Giants head coach. From 2022-25, he posted a 20-40-1 record.
Kafka served as Giants offensive coordinator in all four of Daboll’s seasons in New York. Then, Kafka was the team’s interim head coach after Daboll’s firing in 2025.
The Giants went 2-5 under Kafka.
Eagles Considering Brian Daboll OC Opening: Report
Eagles fans might moan at the idea of hiring failed former rival coaches. But Daboll has had a lot of success as an offensive coordinator.
He served in that role with the Buffalo Bills from 2018-21. During that time, Daboll helped develop Josh Allen, who greatly improved his completion percentage under the OC.
Daboll has also been an offensive coordinator for three other teams in his career. He held the role with the Cleveland Browns from 2009-10, with the Miami Dolphins in 2011 and Kansas City Chiefs during 2012.
In addition to his previous experience with Hurts, Daboll worked under both Saban and Bill Belichick. Daboll had two different stints with the New England Patriots from 2000-06 and 2013-16.
During those 11 seasons, Daboll held several jobs on both sides of the ball.
Eagles Also Interested in Mike Kafka: Report
Outside of Daboll’s first season, things didn’t work out for the Giants under their previous coaching staff. The franchise has now taken a big swing by hiring John Harbaugh.
A big reason for the failure was the quarterback production. Daboll and Kafka got the most out of signal-caller Daniel Jones in 2022. Behind Jones’s career year, the Giants won a playoff game under Daboll.
But Kafka’s offense never finished above 17th in points scored in his final three seasons. During 2024, the unit was 30th in yards and 31st in points.
If the Eagles hire Daboll or Kafka as offensive coordinator, they will be hoping for results much closer to what the 2022 Giants experienced. In 2022, the Giants were 15th in points and 18th in yards.
They were fourth in rushing and 26th in passing that season as well.
The New York offense showed some promise under rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart this past season. Dart completed 63.7% of his passes while averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. He also had 15 passing touchdowns and five interceptions
