At this point, it’s pretty clear the Philadelphia Eagles have several leading candidates for their open offensive coordinator position — a group likely led by former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

Don’t rule out a dark horse candidate, however, and that could come from an unexpected source.

“The Eagles have shown interest in Ole Miss OC Charlie Weis for their offensive coordinator position,” The Eagles Times wrote on its official X account on Thursday, January 15.

Weis is the son of 4-time Super Bowl champion Charlie Weis, who won 3 of those titles as the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots from 2000 to 2004 before leaving to become the head coach at Notre Dame.

Charlie Weis Jr. just helped lead Ole Miss to an unexpected run to the College Football Playoff semifinals and is actually supposed to become the offensive coordinator at LSU under head coach Lane Kiffin, who left the Rebels to take that job right before the CFP.

“Ole Miss OC Charlie Weis Jr.’s name has come up a lot in this cycle as NFL head coaching candidates pitch potential staffs in interviews,” NFL reporter Pat Leonard wrote on his official X account. “And I’m told the Philadelphia Eagles have poked around on him for their OC vacancy. Jaxson Dart’s college OC getting inquiries.”

Weis Jr. Has History With Eagles QB Jalen Hurts

Aside from having his father as a conduit to a coaching career, Weis Jr. himself has established some pretty incredible connections in the coaching world at just 32 years old.

“Interesting! Charlie Weis Jr. was an offensive assistant at Alabama from 2015 to 2016 when Jalen Hurts was there,” The Philly Special’s Anthony DiBona wrote on X. “He also spent one season in the NFL as an offensive assistant for the Falcons in 2017. Weis is expected to be LSU’s OC in 2026 but the Eagles seem interested.”

That kind of pedigree makes him an interesting candidate from the jump.

“Would think it would be tough from an optics standpoint for the Eagles to go with someone with no NFL play-calling experience after the Kevin Patullo experiment,” Sports Illustrated’s John McMullen wrote on X. “Still, you shouldn’t be worried about placating outside voices, and you would be limiting yourself if you didn’t consider everyone with potential.”

Weis Jr. Turned Jaxson Dart Into First Round Pick

The star pupil for Weis Jr. to this point in his coaching career has to be former Ole Miss quarterback and New York Giants 2025 first round pick Jaxson Dart.

Dart continued to get better all 3 seasons playing for Weis Jr., culminating in a bravura 2024 campaign in which he threw for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns and 6 interceptions while completing 69.3 percent of his passes and led the NCAA with  a 180.3 passer rating.

“Interesting,” Locked on Birds podcast host Louie DiBiase wrote on X. “Dart and Hurts are similar style players so I get where their head is at.”

Weis Jr. has another important connection to the Eagles. Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni was an assistant coach on the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 when Charlie Weis was the offensive coordinator there.
