The Philadelphia Eagles have tough roster decisions to make and only one more week to figure them out.

Philly saw a lot of production from younger and new players in the 24-21 preseason loss to the New England Patriots. That game featured a bunch of players playing well, but it might also have caused some headaches for the Eagles coaching staff.

One player is getting a lot of debate about whether he should be in the conversation to make the team. His performance against the Patriots should have helped. It may not be enough, though.

Philadelphia Eagles Predicted to Not Keep Preseason Star

The Athletic Eagles reporters Brooks Kubena and Zach Berman made their 53-man roster predictions after the loss to the Patriots. Eagles running back Carson Steele was the star of the game, but his 117-yard performance was not enough for Kubena or Berman to predict him to make the team.

Carson Steele just made it very hard for the Eagles to stash him on their practice squad,” Kubena said. “The hurdling Steele played like all the other 31 teams were watching — and, indeed, their pro scouting departments were. Steele, an undrafted rookie in 2024, will be subject to waivers if the Eagles cut him. I can’t see him making the roster in this crowded position group, and he has not been practicing as an H-back in training camp, suggesting the Eagles wouldn’t file him under the “tight end/fullback” category.

This happens in training camp. Steele’s preseason appearances are essentially job interviews with other teams. He’ll have another one in the preseason finale on Friday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Steele only had two yards in the preseason opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He flipped the switch with 33 rushing yards, 84 receiving yards, and 1 touchdown against the Patriots.

In his first two seasons in the NFL, Steele played for the Kansas City Chiefs. He only played in 2024, rushing for 183 yards and catching another 26 yards in 17 games.

Steele certainly made life tough on the Eagles, as he played well enough to make the team. Philly would have to make one decision first with Steele before considering him for the roster.

If Steele is viewed as a fullback, what would that mean for Cameron Latu? The Eagles use Latu as a tight end, fullback, and special teams ace, so Steele would have to make the same kind of impact on special teams that Latu does.

The Eagles wouldn’t be opposed to carrying four running backs, but they have a lot of other positions to consider. Steele’s performance against the Patriots, though, would have NFL teams trying to claim him if he were waived.

Not many players can pull off multiple huddles in the same game. Steele won’t make it to the Eagles just to give up on him yet.
