The Philadelphia Eagles have made several transactions involving veteran offensive lineman Kenyon Green over the last several months. On Wednesday, they made another.
The Eagles announced signing Green to the team’s active roster. Green is returning to the Philadelphia 53-man roster 11 days after the team waived him on September 6.
Green was on the team’s roster for Week 1. However, the Eagles included the veteran on their list of inactive players for the season opener versus the Dallas Cowboys.
The guard fills a roster spot the Eagles have had available for about a week.
Philadelphia had an open spot on its active roster after rookie tackle Cameron Williams was placed on Injured Reserve ahead of Week 2,” wrote Philadelphiaeagles.com.
Green began his NFL career as the No. 15 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Guard Kenyon Green Returning to Eagles
The Houston Texans selected Green in the first round. He started 14 games as a rookie, but he played poorly.
Then before his second season, Green suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in August. He returned to start nine games for the Texans during 2024.
In March, the Texans traded Green to the Eagles for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The two teams also exchanged draft picks.
The Eagles waived Green before the NFL’s roster cutdown deadline in late August. Green returned to the team on the practice squad a couple days later.
Then a few more days after that, the offensive lineman was added to the Philadelphia active roster. He spent about a week on the roster before the team waived him again.
When he received a bulk of his playing time during 2022, Pro Football Focus ranked Green the worst guard in the league. Based on the PFF grades, Green allowed 47 quarterback pressures, including four sacks. He also committed 12 penalties.
Eagles Offensive Line Depth Entering Week 3
Re-signing a former first-round pick who is familiar with one’s organization is usually considered a good move. But it’s a bit of a curious transaction for the Eagles right now.
Philadelphia has a relatively healthy offensive line. It’s not exactly clear where Green fits on the active roster. More than likely, he’s not going to dress in Week 3, just as he didn’t for the season opener.
Bleeding Green Nation’s Brandon Lee Gowton was critical of the move to re-sign Green on Wednesday.
“Green is bound to be a healthy scratch behind the Eagles’ eight active offensive linemen on game day. The five starters (Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson) and the top three backups (Fred Johnson, Brett Toth, Matt Pryor) are already set,” Gowton wrote. Green joins Drew Kendall as the only two blockers who won’t dress for games, barring injury issues.
The Eagles, though, appear to still like the offensive lineman’s potential. Green is only 24 years old and was a two-time All-American at Texas A&M.
Green has started 23 games and appeared in four other contests during his NFL career. The Eagles will host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Kickoff will occur at 1 pm ET at Lincoln Financial Field.
