Steelers Announce Roster Move With Specialist Role

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced they released kicker Laith Marjan, who was competing behind Chris Boswell this training camp.

Because of perennial All-Pro Chris Boswell, undrafted rookie kicker Laith Marjan had about a zero percent chance of making the Pittsburgh Steelers roster this month. The team made that official this weekend.

The Steelers announced Sunday they waived Marjan from their preseason roster. Team insiders Nick Farabaugh and Alex Kozora confirmed the news on X.

Pittsburgh’s decision to part ways with Marjan was also included on the league’s transaction wire Sunday afternoon.

“Steelers now have an open 90-man roster spot after releasing UDFA rookie Laith Marjan of Kansas,” wrote Steelers.com’s Brian Batko on X. “Who handled the kicking duties Friday night.”

In Friday’s preseason contest versus the New York Jets, Marjan missed his only attempt. That was a 44-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The Steelers lost to the Jets 17-0.

Marjan joined the team as an undrafted free agent after the 2026 NFL Draft. He kicked at Kansas during his senior college season.

In college, Marjan also kicked for East Carolina and South Alabama over his four-year career.

Again, Marjan had virtually no path to a roster spot in Pittsburgh.

NFL teams don’t keep two kickers. So, the only way the Steelers were going to consider retaining Marjan was if Chris Boswell suffered an injury.

In the best case scenario, Marjan would have done well enough to put good work on tape for his resume to show another NFL team.

Unfortunately for him, his last image with the Steelers was an ugly 44-yard miss in the preseason. The good news, though, is Marjan made all three of his extra points in Week 1 of the exhibition campaign.

He didn’t get a field goal attempt in that game.

The undrafted rookie will be on waivers for another team to claim. He will become a free agent if unclaimed.

At Kansas last season, Marjan went 14-for-17 on field goal attempts (82.4%). He made all 40 of his extra points.

Kicking for South Alabama in 2024, Marjan connected on 16 of 17 tries (94.1%) and 42 of 44 extra points (95.5%).

Steelers Still Have Chris Boswell

The big takeaway from Sunday’s roster move for the average Steelers fan is one of status quo. In 2026, Boswell will once again be Pittsburgh’s place kicker.

No one should be upset about that.

For years, Boswell was in Justin Tucker’s shadow a bit. But with Tucker out of the league, Boswell is a serious candidate for the best kicker in the league title.

During 2024, he firmed held that title with a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl campaign. In that season, he led the league with 41 field goals on 44 tries. He also made all 35 of his extra points.

Last season, Boswell saw his field goal percentage dip to 84.4%. But he had far fewer opportunities, which highlighted his misses.

He was still rather clutch. In Week 1, Boswell helped the Steelers start 1-0 with a 56-yarder and 60-yard field goal in a 34-32 victory. His 60-yarder came with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Boswell also made the Pro Bowl during the 2017 campaign.

Over his entire career, he has made 87.7% of his field goals. That’s ranked sixth all time in NFL history.
