Aaron Rodgers helped the Steelers finish the regular season 10-7 and capture the AFC North title, but with the quarterback turning 43 next year, the team will likely need to start planning for a new leader under center after the 2025–2026 season.

While the Steelers and their fans are focused on the playoffs for now, mock drafts are already gaining attention. In a recent mock draft by NFL reporter Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today, the Steelers are projected to find their next quarterback, selecting Alabama’s Ty Simpson with the 21st overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“Simpson could stand to benefit from a shallow quarterback class if he chooses to declare, as coaching staffs might see a passer worth developing thanks to his quick processing and pocket awareness,” wrote Middlehurst-Schwartz.

The Steelers have other areas to address, such as adding a reliable wide receiver to pair with their top target, DK Metcalf, since the wide receiver room lacks depth. Still, there’s no question that finding a replacement for Aaron Rodgers at quarterback will be one of the team’s biggest priorities sooner rather than later.

A Deeper Look at Ty Simpson

Simpson had an impressive season at Alabama, throwing for 3,567 yards and posting a standout 28-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, according to ESPN.

On ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper’s 2026 NFL Draft big board, Simpson is ranked the third-best quarterback prospect, behind Dante Moore of Oregon and Fernando Mendoza of Indiana, both projected to go in the top five in most mock drafts.

NFL draft analyst Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports is high on Simpson, projecting the Alabama quarterback to be a top-10 pick.

“Ty Simpson is a top-10 pick, in part because of the position he plays, but mostly because of the way he plays it. The game slows down for him in ways it usually doesn’t for college quarterbacks in their first year as starters,” Wilson said. “And while the first half of the season was better than the second, Simpson battled a back injury that affected his ability to push the ball down the field. He consistently showed poise beyond his experience—standing tall in the pocket, making throws without panicking or forcing the issue.”

“What separates Simpson isn’t just arm talent; it’s how clearly he understands what defenses are trying to do. He sees leverage, trusts windows before they fully open and consistently takes what the defense gives him,” said Wilson.

Other Options at Quarterback

Although many believe that Rodgers will hang up the cleats following the 2025-2026 season, if Rodgers decides he wants to return, starting Rodgers next year can still be an option.

“Rodgers stands out as the Steelers’ clear top option behind center next year if he wants to return,” wrote Jack Markowski of Sports Illustrated.

Another name to keep an eye on is Kyler Murray, who has been linked as a potential fit for the Steelers next season.

“Kyler Murray is likely to be on the move in the offseason, with the Arizona Cardinals ready to move on. The Steelers could be a natural fit, and Murray is someone who at least would have the chance to be a multi-year starter in Pittsburgh,” wrote Dan Treacy of Yahoo Sports.
