nly one game remains in the 2025 NFL season. On Sunday, Feb. 8, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will face off in Super Bowl LX, with the winner forever etched in NFL history. For the remaining two teams, the focus is all about this weekend and being the franchise that stands alone on the NFL mountaintop. But for the rest of the league, the offseason is in full swing– where preparing for a successful 2026 season is at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
In the midst of all the playoff action, this year’s NFL carousel was extremely active, with a double digit number of teams searching for new head coaches– while many others needed to fill assistant coaching roles. And the 49ers were a casualty in this year’s cycle in more ways than one, losing defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to the Tennessee Titans before hiring Raheem Morris to take his place. But the 49ers saw other key coaches leave as well, most recently losing defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks to the Green Bay Packers.
Bullocks Leaves the 49ers After Nine Seasons
Bullocks was removed from the 49ers’ official coaching staff page on the website, sparking a frenzy amongst fans. But according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Bullocks removal from the site is because he is taking a job on Matt LaFleur’s staff in Green Bay– with his role still unspecified.
“The Packers are expected to hire 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks, sources tell CBS Sports,” Zenitz tweeted. “The former Nebraska and NFL defensive back worked for San Francisco the last nine seasons [and] interviewed for the 49ers defensive coordinator job in 2024.”
Bullocks’ departure is one of the many changes coming to the 49ers’ defensive coaching staff in the wake of Saleh leaving and Morris taking the job. Experiencing a revolving door at defensive coordinator in the Kyle Shanahan era, Morris is likely to bring in some of his own staff members on defense, giving the franchise yet another identity on the defensive side of the ball.
Bullocks’ Coaching Career
Bullocks has been with the 49ers since Kyle Shanahan was hired in 2017, and is one of the first hires made by Shanahan. Serving as the assistant defensive backs coach from 2017-18, Bullocks was promoted to safety coach ahead of the 2019 season– a role he has been in ever since. Prior to his time with the 49ers, Bullocks was the assistant defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016.
A star safety at Nebraska from 2001-05, earning Second-team All-Big 12 honors in ’05, Bullocks was a second round draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, spending four seasons playing for the franchise. After his release ahead of the 2010 season, Bullocks turned to coaching and took his first coaching job in 2012 as the defensive backs coach at Northern Iowa. Spending three seasons there, Bullocks spent 2015 as the cornerbacks coach at Eastern Michigan before going to the Jaguars.
