The San Francisco 49ers haven’t had much go their way over the past year or so. They came up just short of defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, saw their 2024 campaign get plagued by injuries, and entering the 2025 campaign, they are still fighting the injury bug. Among the players who have been limited so far in training camp is wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
After being one of the few players to enjoy a strong 2024 season in San Francisco, Jennings made it clear ahead of training camp that he either wanted a new deal from the 49ers or to be traded. So far, nothing has materialized on this front, but his latest move indicates that there could be some sort of resolution for his situation on the horizon.
Jauan Jennings Attends 49ers Preseason Game vs. Raiders
Jennings latched on with the Niners in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, working behind the scenes early in his career before eventually earning a larger role in the offense. Over the first three seasons of his career, Jennings played in 16 games each year, but he was a secondary option in the passing game on offense.
That changed in 2024, largely because the 49ers had nobody else to run out on the field at wide receiver. In 15 games, Jennings caught 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns, proving he could be counted on to produce when San Francisco needed him to. With Deebo Samuel getting traded to the Washington Commanders this offseason, that elevated Jennings to the No. 2 wide receiver role behind Brandon Aiyuk.
The problem is that, beyond his contract issue, Jennings is dealing with a calf injury that has held him off the field for the majority of training camp. Whether or not he’s holding out is unknown, but the longer Jennings stays off the field, the more concerning his situation becomes for the team and their fans.
However, there was a noteworthy development that took place at San Fran’s latest preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday afternoon. While Jennings is not playing in the contest, he did show up to support his team, with some folks taking that as a sign that progress could be getting made in contract talks between the two sides.
49ers Face Unique Contract Situation with Jauan Jennings

Jennings signed a two-year, $15.4 million contract extension with the 49ers just last offseason, but as he prepares to enter the final season of that deal, he wants a pay raise. San Francisco is in a bit of an odd spot, as they just extended Jennings, and faced a similar contract standoff with Aiyuk last year. After paying Aiyuk, he promptly struggled before suffering a torn ACL and MCL that ended his season in Week 7.
Again, the true circumstances of Jennings’ absence are unknown, as he could be getting held off the field due to his injury, or he could be choosing not to participate in practices because of his contract situation. Regardless, the team and their fans will be hoping things get sorted out with Jennings soon, because they are going to need him on the field come Week 1.
