Philadelphia Eagles fans are known as being some of the most passionate, if not moderately delusional fans in the NFL. As they prepare to watch their team host the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round this weekend, 49ers alum Richard Sherman took to social media to stick up for the Niners.

Sherman, who played three seasons with San Francisco at the end of his career, defended the 49ers after hearing Eagles fans call out the team.

“Injuries aren’t an excuse it’s the reality of the game,” Sherman wrote. “If the Eagles were without Jalen Carter, A.J. Brown and Saquon and they played a playoff game and lost you would say they would have won if they had them. That’s the reality of it.

If the 49ers had Bosa and Warner this wouldn’t even be a conversation. The fact that this will be a game even without 2 top 25 players in the NFL says more than anything. But you will see.”

Sherman Defends Injured 49ers Ahead of Wild Card Weekend

Richard Sherman was known as one of the more outspoken players in the NFL during his playing career, and his new media career seems to be following in the same footsteps.

Sherman believes the Niners have every chance to go on the road and beat the 49ers, even without two of their best defensive players in Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. Warner was lost in the middle of the season to a fractured and dislocated ankle, while Bosa tore his ACL back in September.

Even without these two defensive stalwarts, the 49ers were in contention to grab the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC until the final week of the season.

The Eagles enter Sunday’s Wild Card game as five point favorites, but oddsmakers typically grant home teams three points by virtue of their home field advantage. This goes to say that this is effectively a pick ’em game from a betting perspective.

Can 49ers Defense Limit Already Embattled Eagles Offense?

The Philadelphia Eagles offense has been treading in muddy waters all season despite their abundance of weapons. Philly ranks in the bottom half of the NFL in all of the most important offensive categories: passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, and points per game.

With that being said, the 49ers defense hasn’t been perfect this season either. They’ve allowed 21.8 points per game, 13th in the NFL and 340 yards per game, 19th in the NFL. Outside of their final game of the season where they allowed just 13 points to a strong Seattle offense, San Fran allowed 24, 27, and 38 points in weeks 15-17, needing massive offensive firepower to overcome their defensive shortcomings.

The Eagles defense remains strong with Jalen Carter and Zack Baun running the linebacker unit and an embarrassment of riches in their secondary.

This is very much a prove it type game for Brock Purdy, who has taken plenty of unwarranted criticism despite his strong play this season.

Niners-Eagles will get underway in Philly at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11.
