It is a new world for the Seattle Seahawks as the team now has several former players heading back to college football. Seattle is cutting ties with one of the team’s running backs, a move made for a variety of reasons.
Seahawks rookie Jadarian Price appears to be back at full health. Running back Jacardia Wright also impressed in the Seahawks’ preseason matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
Seattle announced that the team has moved on from running back Anthony Hankerson. The Seahawks cutting ties with the undrafted rookie opens up a roster spot.
Seattle has yet to announce a corresponding move as the Seahawks could have more roster spots opening up given several players are dealing with injuries.
As for Hankerson, the running back is among the NFL players who have expressed a desire to return to college football.

Seahawks Rumors: RB Anthony Hankerson Intends to Enter College Football Transfer Portal After Being Released by Seattle
It will be interesting to see what Hankerson’s next move will be following his release. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that Hankerson intended to enter the college football transfer portal.
“The Seahawks plan to waive running back Anthony Hankerson and, if he clears waivers, he plans to return to college and enter the transfer portal, his agents @david_benzaken and @IanGrutman tell me and @chris_hummer,” Zenitz detailed in an August 24, message on X.
“Posted 2,168 rushing yards the last two seasons at Oregon St.”
16 NFL Players Legally Petitioned to Have College Football Eligibility
Hankerson is coming off back-to-back seasons topping 1,000 rushing yards at Oregon State. The running back posted 247 carries for 1,086 yards and nine touchdowns during 12 appearances in 2025.
It will be worth watching to see if Hankerson can find a landing spot given the college football season is just days away from starting. Hankerson is among the NFL players who legally petitioned to have their college football eligibility restored.
“The list of plaintiffs includes 16 football players, several who signed with NFL teams and participated in training camps earlier this month,” ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Pete Thamel wrote in an August 19, story titled, “Ex-Ole Miss starters granted restraining order for 5th year.”
“Three of the players — Wright, Williams and former Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson — are currently listed on NFL rosters for the Browns, Cardinals and Seahawks, respectively,” Murphy and Thamel added.
“Those players have expressed an interest in being released from their NFL contracts, according to attorney Ryan Downton, and if their NFL teams release them by Sept. 1 they will be allowed to join a college roster under the restraining order.”

Hankerson is the latest in a series of NFL players pushing to return to college football. The sport is widely being criticized for this new reality.
“This is so ridiculous it makes my head hurt,” The News Tribune’s Gregg Bell remarked in an August 24, message on X.
“And college presidents remain bystanders, doing nothing, afraid to get sued, waiting for Congress to make laws that aren’t coming for this nonsense.”
