The Seattle Seahawks already had reason to monitor Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Now the possibility of him eventually reaching the trade market has gained a little more substance.
Steelers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Pittsburgh and Porter are at an “impasse” in contract negotiations, the strongest public acknowledgment yet that the sides remain far apart as the regular season approaches. Porter has yet to practice during training camp and remains on the physically unable to perform list.
That does not mean Pittsburgh has decided to trade him, and there is still no report that Seattle has called the Steelers.
But it makes a situation the Seahawks already had reason to watch considerably more interesting.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported August 20 that multiple teams had wondered about Porter as a potential trade target because he is entering the final season of his rookie contract and the price of elite cornerbacks continues to climb. Heavy detailed at the time why Seattle should be among the teams monitoring the situation.
McCarthy has now supplied the next development.

“I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter,” McCarthy said Monday, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “I know our defensive guys would love the opportunity. So we’re at an impasse right here, and you got to respect that.”
McCarthy emphasized that Pittsburgh has its own organizational beliefs when it comes to contracts, while Porter has his position as well.
The timing matters.
Porter is heading into the final year of the rookie deal he signed after Pittsburgh selected him No. 32 overall in 2023. ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio also noted that the Steelers traditionally do not negotiate new contracts once the regular season begins.
That creates a natural pressure point before Week 1.
Pittsburgh could still bridge the gap and lock up one of its best young defenders. The Steelers could also allow Porter to play out the season.
But if neither side moves and Porter remains unwilling or unable to get back on the field, the trade scenario other NFL teams have been monitoring becomes harder to dismiss.

Seattle’s recent moves make that particularly relevant.
The Seahawks signed former All-Pro Trevon Diggs after working him out in August, adding a veteran with major upside but also a lengthy recent injury history. Seattle has also pursued former Detroit Lions first-round pick Terrion Arnold, whose expected placement on the Commissioner’s Exempt List leaves his immediate availability uncertain.
Those moves suggest general manager John Schneider has not been content simply to stand pat at cornerback even after locking up Devon Witherspoon on a massive long-term extension.
Porter would represent a very different type of acquisition.
He is only 26 and started all 14 games he played for Pittsburgh last season. Pro Football Reference charted quarterbacks as completing just 48.5% of their passes when targeting Porter in 2025, with a 57.2 passer rating. He finished with 14 passes defensed, one interception and one sack.
Pro Football Focus credited him with a 74.1 coverage grade while allowing only 29 receptions.
The obstacle for Seattle would not simply be Pittsburgh’s asking price. Porter is pursuing the kind of second contract that has helped create the stalemate in the first place.
Seattle just committed four years and $132 million to Witherspoon, a deal that helped move the cornerback market even higher. Any Porter acquisition would therefore have to make sense both in draft compensation and in the long-term structure of a defense already paying one premium corner.
That could ultimately make a trade too expensive.
But the calculus changes if Pittsburgh reaches the point where moving Porter becomes preferable to entering the season with an unresolved standoff.
Four days ago, Porter was an intriguing name for Seattle to monitor.
After McCarthy publicly acknowledged an impasse, there is now a more concrete reason to keep watching.
