The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are saying goodbye to one of the most respected minds in football history.
As NBC Sports noted, Tom Moore, the Bucs’ senior offensive consultant, has decided to retire at age 87.
He spent an extraordinary 62 years in coaching and more than 46 seasons in the NFL.
Moore confirmed the decision to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, explaining that family ultimately guided his choice
“It’s time for me to go home and take care of my wife,” Moore said, referencing his wife Willie, who suffered a stroke earlier this year.
“For 62 years, she made a lot of sacrifices so I could live a dream and it’s always been about Tom, but now it’s about Willie.”
The announcement immediately sparked an outpouring of respect from across the football world.
National figures universally labelled Moore a legend.
A Legendary NFL Career
Moore’s resume reads like a history book of modern NFL offense.
He entered the league in 1977 as a wide receivers coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, eventually becoming their offensive coordinator in 1983.
After stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, and New Orleans Saints, Moore’s legacy was cemented in Indianapolis.
From 1998 through 2009, Moore served as offensive coordinator for the Colts, overseeing one of the most dominant offenses the league has ever seen.
Working closely with Peyton Manning, Moore led the Colts on an unbelievable run, including multiple Super Bowl appearances, and a Lombardi Trophy in 2007.
His straightforward, player-first coaching style made him beloved by quarterbacks and all his players.
After leaving Indy, Moore continued contributing with the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals.
He then joined Tampa Bay’s staff in 2019 as a senior offensive consultant where he won another Super Bowl.
Reflecting on his journey, Moore said, “I’ve been fortunate to land in a lot of great places.”
He acknowledged how lucky he was to finish his career in Tampa:
“This is a great place. The Glazers are fantastic owners. It doesn’t get any better than Jason Licht as general manager.”
He was one of the most well-respected coaches to ever step foot on an NFL field and finished his career with three Super Bowl titles.
Part of a Broader Buccaneers Reset
Moore’s retirement comes amid a wave of change in Tampa Bay.
After deciding to retain head coach Todd Bowles, the Buccaneers have begun reshaping their entire coaching staff.
They moved on from several assistants, signaling a broader reset around the whole team.
While Moore’s exit is rooted in personal reasons, it still marks the end of an era for the organization.
For the Bucs, losing Tom Moore means losing a living bridge to decades of NFL excellence.
For the rest of the NFL, it’s the closing chapter on one of the game’s most influential and universally respected coaching careers.
