The Washington Commanders shared brutal details about the injury to wide receiver and return specialist Jaylin Lane in a Week 4 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in London.
“Commanders punt returner and WR Jaylin Lane suffered a fracture and dislocation of his ankle, tests confirmed, and he is likely done for the season,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on his official X account on Monday morning. “Lane’s ankle has now been stabilized, and the speedster is undergoing further tests for the injury in London.”
“I can confirm Commanders WR Jaylin Lane suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle against the Colts,” The Washington Post’s Tashan Reed wrote on his official X account on Monday. “He’ll need surgery and his season will almost certainly be over.”
“Commanders WR Jaylin Lane suffered a fracture & dislocation of his ankle,” Jay Daniels MVP wrote on its official X account. “He will be out for the season.”
“Dan Quinn had said after the game it was a ‘serious’ ankle injury,” ESPN’s John Keim wrote on his official X account on Monday. “Commanders lose their punt and kickoff returner. Showed he could help at times at WR.”
Lane’s ‘Graphic’ Injury Briefly Halts Broadcast
Lane’s injury was tough to stomach and briefly halted the NFL Network’s broadcast early Sunday morning, citing the “graphic” nature of the injury, which came as Lane returned a kickoff to open the second half.
“Replay shows Lane’s ankle facing wrong direction,” Commanders reporter Martenzie Johnson wrote on X on Sunday. “Jaylin Lane being carted off the field.”
“Jaylin Lane Left ankle injury,” Dr. Jesse Morse wrote on his official X account on Sunday. “Initial concern is for ankle fracture/dislocation. Reminds me of Chris Godwin injury. Season-ending.”
Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton predicted Lane would have a bigger role in Washington’s offense in 2026 — something that will now have to wait until 2027.
“The Washington Commanders have one established receiver in Terry McLaurin, who’s coming off an injury-riddled 2025 season and turning 31 in September,” Moton wrote on July 13. “Although the Commanders could bring in a veteran receiver like Stefon Diggs, the young players at the position could still get enough opportunities to break out. As a rookie, Lane played a minimal role on offense, recording 16 catches for 225 yards while on the field for just 37 percent of the snaps. However, Lane showcased his playmaking ability on special teams, returning 23 punts for 314 yards and two touchdowns and three kicks for 56 yards. If the Commanders find ways to get him the ball in space, he could rack up big gains in the passing game as well.”
