Daniel Snyder sold the Washington Commanders in 2023 to a group led by private equity investor Josh Harris. Nonetheless, since that $6.05 billion sale, Snyder hasn’t been in the public eye and doesn’t appear to be eyeing any sports ownership.
In a Aug. 23 article from Mark Maske of Front Office Sports, former Snyder associates were interviewed, and it appears that the former Commanders owner is off the grid and has cut ties with anyone from his days as an NFL team owner.
Moreover, a Snyder associate believes that the former Commanders owner, who relocated from the U.S. to London with his wife, Tanya, before the sale was completed, would still want to own the team.
“I heard he was interested as a potential investor [in a soccer team] soon after he sold the Commanders,” the former Snyder associate told FOS. “But I haven’t heard anything recently…. He’d still prefer to own the [Commanders].”
Since Snyder sold the team, the Commanders drafted a franchise QB in Jayden Daniels, reached the NFC title game in 2025, and are building a new stadium that should be ready for 2030.
Dan Snyder Might Not Be Looking to Return to U.S.
The NFL also has little interest in discussing the former Commanders owner, as the franchise has moved on and the league has done the same.
“From what I have gathered through just talking to people, the league has just totally moved on from him,” a former Snyder staffer told FOS. “You bring up that name, people are like, ‘What?’ Like, ‘Nah, never mind.’ And I think he’s over there just basically living a life of anonymity. Nobody in London gives a s–t who Dan Snyder is.
“And it’s probably mutually beneficial. The people in London don’t care…. It’s one of those things where thank God I don’t spend much time thinking about [it]…. It’s just weird. It’s like talking about a movie sometimes…. People would be like, ‘Really?’ Yeah, believe it or not, that actually happened.”
Additionally, one former associate doesn’t see Snyder staying away from the public light and resurfacing in a few years to buy another sports franchise in the U.S.
“He’ll never be back [to reside in the U.S.],” that former staffer said. “In London, they… don’t bother him. Just let him be over there.”
Commanders Inching Closer to Opening New Stadium
As for what the future holds for the Commanders, it’s their new stadium. In 2025, Harris spoke about wanting the team to return to its roots, recalling watching big Washington home games on television and how the camera would show the Washington Monument and the White House, which resonated with him.
“All of that stuff was incredibly motivating for all of us,” Harris said (h/t John Keim of ESPN). “The fact we’ve grown up here gave us that vision to not look at the crumbling concrete [of RFK] but remember in our minds the vivid nature of what Washington football was all about.
“It brought a city that was socioeconomically distinct … together. No matter where you were from, your race, your religion, on Sundays you were Washington football fans.”
