Since striking gold with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during a Super Bowl-winning season and Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins in its 1st season in 2023, the hit Netflix series “Quarterback” has gone from an upbeat, epic, bingeable docu-series to a pretty tough watch.

The new season looks to be more of the same after the streaming service announced the 4 quarterbacks it followed in 2025: Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, Cleveland Browns/Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco, and Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward.

That’s 4 quarterbacks who finished with 4 losing records.

Not exactly what you’d call appointment viewing.

The 2nd season featured Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who proved to be a pretty tough hang, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who proved to be pretty boring, and Cousins, again, although this time he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 8.

“Netflix is bringing back ‘Quarterback’ for Season 3, featuring Jayden Daniels, Joe Flacco, Baker Mayfield, and Cam Ward,” The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov wrote on his official X account on Wednesday. “The series will premiere July 14.”

Nightmare Season for Washington Commanders

It’s hard to imagine Commanders fans tuning in en masse to see Daniels get beaten to a pulp and miss 10 games due to injuries.

Netflix viewers are going to have to watch the Commanders go 5-12 — with Daniels mostly watching — and probably have to relive the brutal, dislocated elbow he suffered late in the season.

That’s not to say the other 3 quarterbacks featured will be any easier to watch.

Mayfield and the Buccaneers started the season 5-1 before going 8-9 and missing the playoffs for the 1st time since 2019. Flacco was traded from 1 miserable team to another early in the season. Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, got his brains beaten out as a rookie on the way to a 3-14 record.

Jayden Daniels Playing for Big Money in 2026

It’s not overstating the situation to say Daniels is playing for what could be the biggest payday in NFL history in 2026.

Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, is in the 3rd season of his 4-year, $37.7 million rookie contract and eligible for a contract extension for the 1st time following the season.

Following a bravura rookie season in which the Commanders went 12-5 and made the NFC Championship Game for the 1st time since 1991, Daniels seemed like chalk to receive the kind of deal reserved for the game’s biggest stars.

That’s not as certain anymore.

In February, Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti put out a list of the projected “Next Man Up” contracts at every NFL position — meaning the next contracts that will reset the market for every different position.

After 2024 it was impossible to think Daniels would be left off the list, but when it comes to the 6 quarterbacks drafted in the 1st round in 2024, only New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye (No. 3 overall) and Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (No. 1 overall) were included.

The current highest paid player in the NFL is Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who signed a 4-year, $240 million contract extension before the 2024 season.

While Ginnitti has Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson as the “Next Man Up” to take over the No. 1 spot, he has Maye and Williams listed as waiting in the wings, which could mean contracts that pay them somewhere in the neighborhood of $65 million per year.
