The Washington Commanders saw their profile take an uptick in 2024 with a surprise, 12-5 record and run to the NFC Championship Game — their 1st appearance there since 1991.
That higher profile led the NFL to book the Commanders in the NFL International Series for just the 2nd time in franchise history and did so in a pretty cool way, scheduling them for the NFL’s first game in Madrid, Spain.
The Commanders announced on Wednesday that they’re going to get another shot at going overseas as 1 of 3 regular-season games to be played in London in 2026.
“Another international assignment: the Commanders have been chosen to play a 2026 regular-season game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will play the NFL’s other 2 regular-season games in London.
The opportunity to play in London also gives the Commanders a chance to make franchise history.
In 2 previous games in the NFL International Series, they’re 0-1-1 with a 16-13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins in 2025 and a 27-27 overtime tie with the Cincinnati Bengals at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2016.
Commanders Could Be in London 2 Straight Weeks
There’s actually a chance the Commanders have an extended stay in London if the NFL scheduling gurus use some common sense.
“The Commanders are at London as a home team,” Commanders fan Chris Williams wrote on X. “Also, the Jags are at London back to back as a home team. Commanders play at Jacksonville this season. Commanders in London back to back weeks?”
The Commanders are coming off a 5-12 season in which star quarterback Jayden Daniels missed 10 games due to a variety of injuries.
Wild Stat About NFL Teams in London
In the 19 years since the NFL started playing regular-season games in London, only once has a team played there and won the Super Bowl that season.
Incredibly, that came with the very 1st NFL regular-season game played outside of the United States in 2007, with the New York Giants defeating the Miami Dolphins, 13-10, in front of 81,176 fans at Wembley Stadium.
The Giants would go on to pull off arguably the biggest upset in NFL history in Super Bowl XLII with a 17-14 win over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots.
Other locations in the NFL International Series have fare much better in terms of hosting Super Bowl winners.
The Philadelphia Eagles opened the 2024 regular season with a 24-21 win over the Green Bay Packers in Sau Paolo, Brazil — the NFL’s 1st regular season game in Brazil — and went on to with the Super Bowl.
The Kansas City Chiefs have played in the NFL International Series twice and went on to win Super Bowls that season. In 2019, the Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City and in 2023, the Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.
“The Washington Commanders will host a game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this season, the NFL announced on Wednesday,” The Athletic NFL official X account wrote. “Their opponent and the date of the game will be revealed in May, when the league releases the full 2026 schedule.”
