Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews left the team’s Thursday night matchup against the Anaheim Ducks early after receiving a knee-on-knee hit from defenseman Radko Gudas.
Now, the Maple Leafs have provided an injury update on Matthews, and it is certainly bad news for the 28-year-old center.
The Maple Leafs have announced that Matthews has suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion and will be out for the rest of the 2025-26 season.
Toronto also shared that Matthews will be re-evaluated in two weeks and that another update on him will be provided then.
This is undoubtedly an unfortunate end to Matthews’ rough 2025-26 season. In 60 games for Toronto this campaign, the 2016 first-overall pick had 27 goals, 26 assists, 53 points, and a minus-4 rating. He also had just one goal in his final 13 games.
