The Toronto Maple Leafs could have one blockbuster deal up their sleeve that could reshape the the balance of power in the Eastern Conference. This blockbuster trade idea looks into the Maple Leafs acquiring impending UFA Kirill Kaprizov from the Minnesota Wild.

Now, such a trade wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. It’s worth pointing out that the Maple Leafs had a deal in place last offseason for Mikko Rantanen. Unfortunately, circumstances didn’t play out in the Leafs’ favor.

Fast-forward to the 2025-26 season, and the Maple Leafs could send shockwaves throughout the NHL by landing Kaprizov in a major trade. Of course, the trade would be contingent on the Wild giving up on the possibility of re-signing Kaprizov.

So, rather than losing him for nothing in free agency, the Wild could ship Kaprizov to the highest bidder. Here’s a look at how this trade idea could shape up:

Maple Leafs get:

Kirill Kaprizov, F

Riley Mercer, G

Wild get:

Max Domi, F

Calle Jarnkrok, F

2027 second-round pick

2028 first-round pick

2029 first-round pick

The package for Kaprizov might seem underwhelming despite the two first-rounders. However, the Wild aren’t precisely in the most advantageous position. They have little leverage as Kaprizov holds a full no-movement clause. As such, he controls where he gets traded.

That situation means that, if Kaprizov agrees to go to the Maple Leafs, the Wild may have little choice but to take the offer Toronto gives them.

Kaprizov Would Solve a Major Pain Point for Toronto

The Maple Leafs have a major pain point in the absence of another high-end winger to play with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. Kaprizov would solve that pain point.

Adding Kaprizov would give the Maple Leafs the best top line in the NHL. The raw scoring power on the line would make it a nightmare for opposing coaches to match up against.

Perhaps the only downside to a Matthews-Knies-Kaprizov line would be the absence of a true playmaker. But then again, Matthews has improved his playmaking abilities, while Knies could help in creating scoring chances.

Then again, all three forwards could feed off one another, creating meaningful scoring chances. Such a dynamic line could shift the balance of power in the Eastern Conference, making the Maple Leafs one of the favorites to unseat the Florida Panthers.

Maple Leafs Would Have a Chance to Shed Bad Contracts

The Maple Leafs would have a shot at dumping a couple of bad contracts in this trade proposal. The Wild could agree to take on Max Domi and Calle Jarnkrok, as they will need roster players who can step in and fill the void left by Kaprizov’s departure.

For the Maple Leafs, clearing up roughly $5 million in cap space will be crucial to making the math work. Unless the Wild were willing to retain some salary, the return for Kaprizov would have to include contracts like Domi or Jarnkrok. David Kampf could also be another candidate in this trade. However, it’s unlikely the Wild take all three: Domi, Jarnkrok, and Kampf.

It’s also worth mentioning the inclusion of goaltender Riley Mercer as a depth option for the Maple Leafs, predominantly at the AHL level. The Leafs could use a third-string goalie. So, Mercer could be a solid option for Toronto.
