The long and complex history between CM Punk and Triple H has been well documented over the years. As WWE fans prepare for SummerSlam tonight, new details about Triple H and CM Punk having a secret meeting before his WWE return have come to light.
After Netflix released the WWE: Unreal documentary on Tuesday, the fans got to see the never-before-seen moments that unfolded behind the curtain during WrestleMania 41. The series gave WWE fans a rare glimpse into the people behind the larger-than-life characters. For context, the documentary provided the following clip to recap the history between CM Punk and Triple H.
During the clip, Triple H revealed that he had a secret meeting with CM Punk years after he’d left WWE in 2014, but also years before he actually returned to the company in 2023. The two always had trouble communicating properly. At the time, Triple H believed Punk was still disgruntled and difficult to work with. To paraphrase, “he’s still the same dude. The two men would try again in late 2023. This time, HHH and Punk were on the same page and formed a mutual respect after realizing both men “are different than they used to be.” Many fans and wrestling critics expected CM Punk to burn out just like he did in AEW. CM Punk had the ultimate dream of main-eventing WrestleMania. To Punk, this symbolized the acceptance of him as a top WWE Superstar. It was also a validation of the 30 years of work Punk put into keeping the heart of wrestling alive. By the end of his original WWE run, Punk had done everything in his career except for being in the main event at WrestleMania. He was obsessed.
The most important argument was that “he deserved it.” Punk had main-evented Summerslam before. It’s unclear if he will win the championship or if WWE officials have new creative plans for him. What is clear is how much the machine has gotten behind Punk.
All CM Punk ever wanted was to be treated like the main event star that he’s been for most of his wrestling career.
