Premier League side Newcastle United are closing in on a major midfield addition, with Manchester City’s Nico González set to move to St James’ Park in a deal worth up to $68 million (£50m).
The clubs have reached a verbal agreement worth $64 million (£47m) up front, with another $4 million (£3m) available in add-ons. González has given the move the green light and is expected to undergo his medical before completing the transfer. Nico González Transfer Gives Newcastle Midfield Experience
Newcastle have already invested heavily in younger players this summer, but González offers something different. At 24, he has already played for Porto and Manchester City and has experience competing at the highest level.
He also comes with an interesting footballing pedigree. González came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy before moving on to Valencia and eventually establishing himself at Porto. Manchester City signed him from the Portuguese club in January 2025, and he went on to make 41 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring twice. Manchester City’s review of González’s 2025-26 season describes him as an energetic midfielder who was dependable when given the opportunity, although his playing time was naturally affected when Rodri was available.
That lack of regular starts is ultimately what has opened the door to Newcastle. González is 6-foot-2 and comfortable playing as a defensive midfielder or further forward. He is not simply a player who sits in front of the defense, either. He brings versatility that Jaissle desperately needs. He can carry the ball, win possession and help Newcastle move the game forward.
A Fresh Start for González—and Newcastle
From City’s perspective, the decision is understandable. González never quite became an automatic starter, and the club can now collect a fee close to what it paid Porto 18 months ago while making room for other additions.
For González, though, this is about more than changing clubs. It is a chance to start every game rather than just being another name competing for minutes in a squad packed with midfield options. And that is precisely what Newcastle needs.
The Magpies have undergone a remarkable amount of change this summer, including the departure of Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal and Tonali to Tottenham. Matthias Jaissle acknowledged that Newcastle’s squad still needed adjustments as the club continued its transfer business.
