MMA legend Dustin Poirier believes that welterweight fighter Yaroslav Amosov, who fights at UFC 328, will be a future UFC champion.

Poirier and Amosov train together at American Top Team, so “The Diamond” knows full well what Amosov brings to the table.

Speaking on the “Deep Waters” podcast on UFC on Paramount+, Poirier said that he believes Amosov has what it takes to be a future UFC welterweight champion, comparing him favorably to another legend of the sport in the great Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“If there’s a prop line somewhere on who’s gonna be the future welterweight champion, if you could find the line for Amosov, he’s gonna be a world champion. He’s the closest thing to Khabib that I’ve ever felt. His grappling is the closest thing to Khabib that I’ve ever felt,” Poirier said.

Yaroslav Amosov is a Former Bellator MMA Champion

Amosov is a 32-year-old Ukrainian fighter who made his UFC debut last year, picking up an impressive submission win over respected veteran Neil Magny. For Amosov, his UFC debut was a long time coming. He was previously the Bellator MMA welterweight champion and was one of the best fighters in that promotion before it effectively went defunct. After the fall of Bellator MMA, Amosov picked up one win on the regional circuit, and then he signed with the UFC. The win over Magny in his promotional debut was extremely impressive, so much so that it gave Amosov the No. 14 ranking in the UFC welterweight division just one fight into his Octagon career.

Amosov’s MMA record stands at 29-1 with 21 finishes, so he is an extremely talented fighter who is also in the prime of his MMA career. In Bellator MMA, Amosov won that promotion’s welterweight title when he beat Douglas Lima in 2021. Lima, who never fought in the UFC, was always considered one of the best non-UFC welterweights in the world, so Amosov’s impressive win over him to claim the Bellator MMA welterweight title opened up eyes to how good he is. He then successfully defended his title once against Logan Storley, another great welterweight not in the UFC, before losing it to the underrated Jason Jackson. The Jackson bout ended up being his final fight in Bellator MMA, as he left the promotion after PFL acquired it and shut down the Bellator MMA brand.

Yaroslav Amosov Favored to Beat Joel Alvarez at UFC 328

The current betting odds for tonight’s UFC 328 card have Amosov listed as a -185 betting favorite to defeat Alvarez, who is a +160 underdog.

On paper, Amosov should have the wrestling advantage in this fight, so if he can get Alvarez down to the floor, he will have the edge. If the fight stays standing, however, Alvarez could use his length, reach, and KO power to give Amosov problems. That’s why this is a very intriguing fight and one that you should not miss when you watch UFC 328 tonight on Paramount+.

With so many eyeballs on tonight’s card due to the main event grudge match between UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev and rival Sean Strickland, Amosov has a tremendous opportunity to shine and show how good he really is with the whole MMA world watching.
