Rising UFC lightweight contender Quillan Salkilld explained why he called out Mateusz Gamrot after a big win at UFC Perth.
Salkilld had the biggest win of his UFC career to date when he knocked out No. 12-ranked lightweight Beneil Dariush in the first round of their co-main event bout at UFC Perth. The win improves Salkilld’s UFC record to 5-0, with four of those wins coming by first-round stoppage.
In his post-fight interview, Salkilld called out the No. 7-ranked lightweight Gamrot, a sensible callout given it’s a step up in competition for the 26-year-old Aussie in the rankings, plus Gamrot is not currently booked for a fight.
For his part, Gamrot appears interested too, based on what he wrote on X.
“Just tell me where at,” Gamrot posted.
Quillan Salkilld Explains Mateusz Gamrot Callout
Speaking to UFC legend Chris Weidman on the UFC on Paramount+ post-fight show, Salkilld explained why he called out a wrestling-heavy fighter like Gamrot, who very few other lightweights tend to make as their callout due to how tough a fight he is.
“I just think that’s a fun fight. I’ve been watching Gamrot for a while. I watched the Gamrot vs. Dariush fight quite a lot leading up to this fight, and I just thought Gamrot would be a fun fight to have. He just had a good win recently (against Esteban Ribovics at UFC 327). I think he’s ranked in the top 10, at No. 7. Perfect. That’s the next good step up for me in terms of the rankings, and a fun fight for the future,” Salkilld said.
UFC Found a Good One in Quillan Salkilld
Dana White’s Contender Series is the UFC’s official feeder program to make it to the big show. In September 2024, Salkilld fought fellow youngster Gauge Young on the show and had a strong performance, earning a UFC contract in the process.
Salkilld then made his promotional debut at UFC 312 in February 2025, knocking out Anshul Jubli in the first round. He followed that up with a decision win over Yanal Ashmouz at UFC 316 in July 2025. Since then, Salkilld has finished three straight foes, knocking out Nasrat Haqparast with a brutal head kick at UFC 321, submitting Jamie Mullarkey with a neck crank at UFC 325, and then finishing Dariush in this bout at UFC Perth. It’s been an incredible rise to the top-15 rankings for Salkilld in a short period of time, and the matchmakers clearly found a great prospect with him.
Taking a look at the current UFC rankings, Gamrot does make a lot of sense as an opponent, and based on his Tweet, it appears the Pole is interested in the fight, too. Otherwise, some potential ranked opponents for Salkilld in his next bout include Dan Hooker and Renato Moicano, two other top-10 ranked fighters who are currently not booked for their next fight. Given that both Salkilld and Gamrot appear interested in fighting each other, the UFC matchmakers will likely try to put that fight together first since it makes their jobs easier. But there are plenty of fun fights for Salkilld at 155 lbs, and he’s a name to watch in the division for many years to come.
