It was not the result the Indiana Fever wanted in the 91-85 loss to the Dallas Wings on Thursday night, but no one will forget history happening in front of them.

Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell had one of her best games of the season, scoring a game-high 37 points. That helped her break a WNBA record for consecutive games with 20+ points, doing it in 21 contests. Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson previously held that record.

While the Fever wanted the victory after the Wings snapped Indiana’s five-game win streak, they can be happy to see Mitchell succeed. The feeling might not be the same for her.

Mitchell was one of three Fever representatives to speak to the media after the game. She opened up about breaking the record, but also not being satisfied with the loss.

“I think that it’s a part of the game. So for one, I just want to, you know, congratulate my team for making me look good. But I think ultimately it just comes down, obviously, to work. But I don’t really take statistics really that serious. So a lot of this stuff is really circumstantial to me. And so I want to get the dub and we didn’t get that. So I think keep my focus on the right thing, keeping the main thing the main thing is important.”

During the game, Mitchell shot 9-of-18 from the field and converted all 15 of her free-throw attempts. She added 5 assists, 1 rebound, and 1 steal to her stat line.

This season, she is averaging 24.6 points, 2.7 assists, 1.7 rebounds, and 1 steal per game in 37 appearances. Mitchell is only behind Wilson in the WNBA in scoring.

Things will only get tougher for the Fever from here. While they have a day to rest, that won’t be the case starting Saturday.

The Fever face off against the New York Liberty on Saturday in New York. On Sunday, they are right back on the road to play the Chicago Sky.

For Indiana, the most important thing is to stay healthy and avoid injuries. The Fever especially need to protect Mitchell, Caitlin Clark, and Aliyah Boston from being overworked and injured.

Mitchell is a key piece to this offense who needs to continue her hot streak if the Fever want to get back on track. She will be a focal point for Indiana over the weekend.
