The Indiana Fever went into Sunday’s game against the Chicago Sky looking to pick up a win after two losses. They got more than they bargained for.
In a close first-quarter game, one moment got the attention of all WNBA fans. It involved the Fever’s controversial guard, Sophie Cunningham, trying to score.
After a Sky turnover, Cunningham got the ball down the court and, in transition, was going for a layup. That’s when Sky starter DiJonai Carrington fouled Cunningham hard with both arms and hands making contact with the head area. Cunningham took offense to it and pushed her before being restrained by her teammate.

The officials reviewed the play after Cunningham and Carrington got into it. After the review, it was ruled a Flagrant 2 foul, and Carrington was ejected from the game.
Cunningham finished the first quarter with just three points, while Carrington scored 8 points and 1 rebound. The Fever had a 23-22 lead over the Sky after the end of the quarter.
This is on the heels of a lot of controversy surrounding Cunningham in the media. She made comments about transgender women in sports, which sparked conversations around the nation about the topic.

The Fever entered the game with a two-game losing streak and needing momentum from the tough losses. Indiana guard Caitlin Clark had some bad moments in the last loss to the Las Vegas Aces, with two missed free throws and a turnover leading to two buzzer-beater three-pointers by the Aces.
Chicago couldn’t afford to lose Carrington in the game. The Sky were already without Sydney Taylor for the game due to an injury.
This is still a big game for both teams. The Fever are trying to move up in the playoff standings. Chicago is trying to get back in the playoff picture, as they are between five and six games behind.
While this is just one game in what is still about 12-15 games in the season, the Fever and Sky are in the back half of their schedules. Every win is going to count for each, so they can’t have moments where they lose.
