Always Dreaming won the 2017 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday night, beating out a field of 20 horses to capture the 143rd Run for the Roses.
Here’s a complete look at this year’s Most Exciting 2 Minutes in Sports:
Ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Todd Pletcher, the three-year-old colt entered the race as a co-favorite at 9-to-2 odds, but he was followed by a couple of long-shots in Lookin at Lee (31/1) and Battle of Midway (37/1), while another favorite, Classic Empire (7/1), finished fourth.
Not only does Always Dreaming immediately enter thoroughbred racing lore as the newest winner of the most prestigious race in the sport, but his team will collect $1.24 million of the $2 million purse. And, of course, all eyes will now turn towards Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, where Always Dreaming will take on the Preakness Stakes and look to check off box No. 2 of the Triple Crown.
