Casey Legumina: Breaking News

Legumina will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher for Sunday's game against the Angels, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Legumina will make his first start of the season after posting a 2.04 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB over 17.2 innings since the Rays acquired him from the Mariners in late April. The right-hander will likely cover an inning or two Sunday before giving way to the bullpen, with Ian Seymour likely to work as the Rays' primary pitcher.

Legumina allowed two hits and no walks in two scoreless innings of relief Monday against the Orioles. He struck out two. After posting a 4.63 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over 11.2 innings for the Mariners, the 28-year-old right-hander has been more effective since being acquired by the Rays in late April. Over 10 frames since joining Tampa Bay's bullpen, Legumina has a 1.80 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 6:3 K:BB with one hold, while working mostly as a middle reliever.

The Rays activated Legumina on Sunday, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports. Tampa Bay acquired Legumina from Seattle on Friday and will now give the right-hander a spot in the bullpen. Legumina posted a 4.63 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings spanning eight appearances for the Mariners prior to the trade. The Rays optioned reliever Trevor Martin to Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.
