Jacob Woodford: Breaking News

Woodford cleared waivers Monday and elected to enter free agency in lieu of an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Woodford had given up four runs in two of his last four outings before being designated for assignment by the Brewers on Friday. Now that he's opted for free agency, the 29-year-old reliever will have the opportunity to catch on with a team in need of right-handed depth out of the bullpen. Woodford sits at a 6.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB across 23.1 innings this season.

The Brewers designated Woodford for assignment Friday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Woodford helped save the bullpen by logging three innings in Thursday's loss to the Giants, but he gave up four runs in the outing and holds a 6.94 ERA on the season. The righty is likely to clear waivers, and he would have the ability to decline an outright assignment.

Woodford earned the save Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing two hits while striking out two over three scoreless innings. Woodford entered with a large lead following Milwaukee's eight-run sixth inning and provided length out of the bullpen, tossing three scoreless innings to finish the game. It was his first save as a Brewer and the fourth of his career. The outing also helped the right-hander stabilize after he had allowed six runs over his previous 7.1 innings. Woodford now owns a 4.61 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and a 9:2 K:BB across 13.2 innings this season.
