Jason Delay: Everything you need to know

Delay and the Red Sox agreed on a minor-league contract Sunday, Aram Leighton of JustBaseball.com reports. Delay with join the Red Sox organization after spending the majority of the 2025 season with Triple-A Gwinnett, batting .219 with eight doubles, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored over 192 at-bats in 59 games. The catcher last appeared in the big leagues in 2024 while with the Pirates, and he'll look to impress with Boston in an attempt to get another crack at the major-league level in 2026.

Atlanta acquired Delay from the Pirates on Thursday in exchange for cash and optioned him to Double-A Columbus. Delay was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday, but a move to Atlanta will allow him to reclaim a spot on a 40-man roster. However, he'll be demoted to Double-A upon joining his new organization and doesn't figure to serve as anything more than minor-league depth for the duration of the season. Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

The Pirates designated Delay for assignment Tuesday. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Thomas Harrington, who is up to start Tuesday's game against the Rays. Delay is just a career .231/.295/.315 hitter over parts of three big-league seasons but could draw interest via waivers from a club in need of catching depth.
