Richard Lovelady: Breaking News

Lovelady will start Monday's game against San Francisco, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. Miles Mikolas was initially slated to start in Monday's series opener. Instead, the Nationals will have Lovelady start on the mound and toss one or two innings before Mikolas takes over in a bulk-relief role. It's the fifth opening assignment of the season for Lovelady, who has a 3.12 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, four saves (in five chances) and a 23:19 K:BB across 26 innings.

Lovelady will start Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. It will be the fourth opening assignment of the year for the 30-year-old, who has also been in the high-leverage mix for the Nationals with four saves and four holds. The recent return of Clayton Beeter may have pushed Lovelady into more of a middle-relief role, especially with his 1.75 WHIP being unsustainable for late-inning work.

Lovelady (2-3) was charged with a loss and a blown save Monday against the Marlins. He allowed two runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning and didn't record a strikeout. Lovelady has been used in several roles throughout the season, as he has two wins, four saves and four holds, but he's also pitched as an opener three times. Monday, he entered the game in the sixth inning after Cade Cavalli allowed a single to Leo Jimenez to lead off the frame, but Lovelady served up a two-run homer to Heriberto Hernandez before hitting Jakob Marsee with a pitch and giving up an RBI double to Connor Norby, saddling him with his first blown save of 2026. Lovelady has made 18 appearances for the Nats since joining the team in mid-April, posting a 3.24 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 16.2 innings.
